BOOK EXCERPT:
After more than 450 years of European intrusions into South America's rainforest, small groups of people across Europe now gather discreetly to participate in Amazonian ceremonies their local governments consider a criminal act. As devotees of a new Brazil-based religion called Santo Daime, they claim that they contact God by way of ayahuasca, a potent psychoactive beverage first developed by native communities in pre-Columbian Amazonia. This bitter, brown liquid is a synergy of plants containing DMT, a mind-altering chemical classified as an illicit "hallucinogen" in most countries. By contrast, Santo Daime members (daimistas) revere ayahuasca as a sacrament, combining it with rituals and theologies borrowed from Christian mysticism, indigenous shamanism, Afro-Brazilian spiritualism, and Western esotericism. The Santo Daime religion was founded in 1930 by an Afro-Brazilian rubber tapper named Raimundo Irineu Serra, now known as Mestre (Master) Irineu. Presenting results from more than a year of fieldwork with Santo Daime groups in Europe, Marc G. Blainey contributes new understandings of contemporary Westerners' search for existential well-being on an increasingly interconnected planet. As a thorough exploration of daimistas' beliefs about the therapeutic potentials of ayahuasca, this book takes readers on an ethnographic journey into the deepest recesses of the human psyche.

BOOK EXCERPT:
One of the most compelling and thought-provoking Vietnam stories ever told begins with an explosion that seriously injures Corporal James Morrison. At first he wonders why he's lying on his back and it's raining on a sunny day. Then he realizes it isn't rain coming down, but human blood. Bloody Jungle Rain explores what happens to the reluctant Marine who was wounded in 1968. His brush with death brings Morrison to an operating room and a near-death experience that changes his life forever. The wounded Marine faces Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, alcoholism and a broken marriage. Yet through his maze of problems there runs a thread of determination and the hope of finding a peaceful harbor. Sadly though, peace was difficult to find for many Vietnam veterans returning home to an unsympathetic public. This story about courage by Colorado native M.J. Earle was written to remember a childhood friend killed in Vietnam. The author says it proves that it is possible to overcome horrendous problems as long as there is faith and hope in the human heart.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Dr. H. M. Baagil’s Muslim Christian Dialogue is a proselytic tract that sets forth Islam’s primary charges against Christianity: the corruption of Scriptures revealed to earlier prophets and the adoption of false and idolatrous doctrine. Dr. Baagil’s treatise has been used by countless Islamic organizations to urge Christians to return to the pure, authentic, uncorrupted religion of Islam. Yet Dr. Baagil’s tract employs insidious and subtle twists of logic to support its conclusions. The book is especially dangerous to the Christian or Muslim unschooled in Christian doctrine or having shallow biblical knowledge. Such a reader will fall prey to Dr. Baagil’s traps, thus being led astray from the truth of the Gospel to an impotent form of religion that denies Jesus’ salvific power. At last—there is now an answer to Dr. Baagil’s treatise. In this volume, A. Yousef Al-Katib sets forth a systemic reply to each of Dr. Baagil’s attacks on Christianity. A. Yousef Al-Katib, himself a Christian convert who spent more than five years in religious study before experiencing the miraculous power of Jesus to heal and to save, thoroughly replies to, refutes and rebuts each of Dr. Baagil’s arguments on a detailed point-by-point basis. He reveals Dr. Baagil’s innumerable contradictions, false statements, circular arguments, illogicisms and erroneous biblical interpretations.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Many of the best lessons in life spring forth out of the clutches of defeat and despair. What defines a person is not the significance of their suffering, or the depth of the despair associated throughout their failures. But rather, the distinguishing legacy of an individual's life is graphically displayed through the response to adversities encountered. The true definition of human triumph is based entirely on learning from mistakes! Accomplishment requires us to somehow garner the determination to move forward, leaving the fear, pain, scars, and insecurities in the past. Amazon Culture: Exploring the Jungle of Narcissism is part memoir―exploring how author and Bible scholar L. K. Cook, PhD struggled through firsthand exposure to narcissistic abuse and eventually triumphed over it. It is also part self-help guide―illuminating a path to hope through the jungle for those who may still be struggling with narcissistic abuse themselves. Pastors, lay ministers, friends, and family seeking to help those in the jungle could also benefit from exploring L. K. Cook's story, observations, and lessons learned the hard way.
