BOOK EXCERPT:

"In order to understand the present day dimensions of mutual perceptions between Christians and Muslims, the history of relations must be recovered and accurately mapped. This work is currently being undertaken in an international project led by David Thomas, Professor Emeritus of the University of Birmingham. Its outcome is the series Christian-Muslim Relations: a Bibliographical History. Each volume contains detailed descriptions and assessments of texts written by the one community about or against the other, together with introductory and contextual essays, and an index, providing an important tool for future research. The first phase, Christian-Muslim Relations: A Bibliographical History 1 (CMR1), covers the crucial period 600 to 1500 (volumes 1-5). The second phase ("CMR1900"), which will take the project up to the end of the First World War, is a work in progress. So far 11 volumes of CMR have been published."-- |c Publisher's website.

The Catecismo Of Mart N P Rez De Ayala

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

It is important for Christians and Muslims to engage in respectful dialogue. However, it is not easy. The present book delves into the past for wisdom and guidance. Spanish theologian Martin Perez de Ayala (1504-66) wrote a catechism or Catecismo that was not published until more than three decades after he had passed away. Why was the Catecismo published posthumously? The search for answers to this question involved evaluating the Catecismo against thirteen other catechisms written in sixteenth-century Spain. This assessment generated timeless principles that can be used today by those who wish to have cordial conversations about Islam and biblical Christianity with their Muslim friends.

Islam As Imagined In Eighteenth And Nineteenth Century English Literature

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Since medieval times, English literature has often demonized Muslims. The term ‘Islamophobia’ is recent, but the phenomenon is old. This survey of literature focusing on the modern period up to 1914 identifies negative ideas about Islam in novels and plays. Some works are iconic, some more obscure. However, the book highlights writers who challenged stereotypes and tended to see Muslims as equally capable of virtue and vice as Christians and others. The book deals with the role of the imagination in depicting others and how this serves authors’ agendas. The conclusion brings the book’s thesis into dialogue with the debate in the USA today between supporters of multiculturalism and its critics. Anyone interested in how stereotypes are formed, perpetuated and can be challenged will profit from this book. It is aimed at a non-specialist readership.

Joan Mart De Figuerola Works 1519 1521

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Lumbre de fe is the most extensive and articulate text of polemic against Islam written during the 16th century in Spanish in the Iberian Peninsula. The work is the result of the preaching task carried out by Joan Martí de Figuerola for the conversion of the Mudejars of Zaragoza between 1517 and 1518, a task that brought Figuerola into numerous confrontations with both ecclesiastical and secular authorities in Aragon for disturbing the coexistence between the two confessions. Lumbre de fe also stands out for its use of qur’ānic texts in Arabic to attack Islam. These texts, also transliterated in Latin characters and translated into Spanish, are commented and discussed by Figuerola, making use of his vast theological erudition and his experience as a preacher in the crown of Aragon. The manuscript in which the work is preserved also contains numerous images representing Islamic beliefs and rites, which further reinforces the enormous originality and strength of the work.
