Creating Value With Circular Business Models

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

To trigger the transformation of businesses towards a Circular Economy, a better understanding of how companies can create and capture value with Circular Business Models is required. This paper addresses the current academic discourse on Circular Business Models with regard to three dimensions. Firstly, this paper aims to discover cross-company and cross-industry patterns within Circular Business Models. Secondly, this paper aims to discover Circular Business Model archetypes based on the recombination of those patterns. Lastly, this paper investigates adoption factors of these business model patterns. A multiple case study analysis of four cases shows that Circular Business Models consist of a recombination of core and support business model patterns. The core business model patterns are determined by the focal intention a company pursues by introducing a circular scheme, whereas the support patterns vary individually from company to company. Consequently, this terminology provides a systematic approach to categorize Circular Business Models across industries. However, Circular Business Model archetypes based on the recombination of business model patterns could not be defined in this paper. The results indicate that profitability enhancements and cost-reductions for customers are major adoption factors. The reduction of the environmental footprint, however, plays only a minor role.
