Clans And Tartans Of Scotland

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Throughout the world there exists an enduring fascination with our ancestry – who we are and where we come from. Nowhere is this more evident than with the generations of Scots who over the centuries have left their native Scotland to create a new life in the New World – North America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. The Scots are a remarkable race with a justifiably proud history and culture which they have successfully passed on through generations. This compact book sets out to identify the larger Scottish clan and family names, their tartans, septs (dependent family names), heraldic crests, mottos, ancestral lands and allegiances. This book features full colour photographs of each tartan as opposed to digital reproductions, allowing readers to see both the textures and patterns.

Scotland As We Know It

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Spanning more than 100 years of cultural history, this book examines the ways that representations of Scottish identity in Scotland and abroad have influenced and responded to the rapid changes of modernity since 1890. Popular representations of Scottish national, ethnic, and cultural identity are in abundance not only in Scotland, but also in the United States, Canada, and throughout the Anglophone settler nations of the world. The author argues that Scotland's history, traditions, and bloodlines have served as ideological battlegrounds for Scots and non-Scots alike to give voice to fantasies of pre-industrial communities and to the realities of working class life. Linking a range of nationalist renditions of Scottish culture, including poetry, film, folklore studies, clan organizations, and popular fiction, this volume shows the importance of Scotland to our present understanding of class, gender, race, and national identity. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

It goes on encountering the Sinclairs in the likes of the Battles of Bannochburn and Culloden to the ill fated Invasion of England in 1648 with King Charles II.
