BOOK EXCERPT:

David Middleton was a towering figure of 20th Century engineering and science and one of the founders of statistical communication theory. During the second World War, the young David Middleton, working with Van Fleck, devised the notion of the matched filter, which is the most basic method used for detecting signals in noise. Over the intervening six decades, the contributions of Middleton have become classics. This collection of essays by leading scientists, engineers and colleagues of David are in his honor and reflect the wide influence that he has had on many fields. Also included is the introduction by Middleton to his forthcoming book, which gives a wonderful view of the field of communication, its history and his own views on the field that he developed over the past 60 years. Focusing on classical noise modeling and applications, Classical, Semi-Classical and Quantum Noise includes coverage of statistical communication theory, non-stationary noise, molecular footprints, noise suppression, Quantum error correction, and other related topics.

Quantum Noise

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book offers a systematic and comprehensive exposition of the quantum stochastic methods that have been developed in the field of quantum optics. It includes new treatments of photodetection, quantum amplifier theory, non-Markovian quantum stochastic processes, quantum input--output theory, and positive P-representations. It is the first book in which quantum noise is described by a mathematically complete theory in a form that is also suited to practical applications. Special attention is paid to non-classical effects, such as squeezing and antibunching. Chapters added to the previous edition, on the stochastic Schrödinger equation, and on cascaded quantum systems, and now supplemented, in the third edition by a chapter on recent developments in various pertinent fields such as laser cooling, Bose-Einstein condensation, quantum feedback and quantum information.

Quantum Noise In Mesoscopic Physics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is written to conclude the NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Quantum Noise in Mesoscopic Physics" held in Delft, the Netherlands, on June 2-4, 2002. The workshop was co-directed by M. Reznikov of Israel Institute of Technology, and me. The members of the organizing committee were Yaroslav Blanter (Delft), Chirstopher Glattli (Saclay and ENS Paris) and R. Schoelkopf (Yale). The workshop was very successful, and we hope that the reader will be satisfied with the scientific level of the present book. Before addressing scientific issues I find it suitable to address several non-scientific ones. The workshop was attended by researchers from many countries. Most of them perform their activities in academic institutions, where one usually finds the necessary isolation from the problems and sores of the modem world. However, there was a large group of participants for which such isolation was far from perfect. War, hatred, and violence rage just several miles away of their campuses and laboratories, poisoning everyday life in the land of Israel.

Instabilities And Nonequilibrium Structures Ii

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

We present here a selection of the seminars given at the Second International Workshop on Instabilities and Nonequilibrium Structures in Valparaiso, Chile, in December 1987. The Workshop was organized by Facultad de Ciencias Fisicas y Matematicas of Universidad de Chile and by Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria where it took place. This periodic meeting takes place every two years in Chile and aims to contribute to the efforts of Latin America towards the development of scientific research. This development is certainly a necessary condition for progress in our countries and we thank our lecturers for their warm collaboration to fulfill this need. We are also very much indebted to the Chilean Academy of Sciences for sponsoring officially this Workshop. We thank also our sponsors and supporters for their valuable help, and most especially the Scientific Cooperation Program of France, UNESCO, Ministerio de Educaci6n of Chile and Fundaci6n Andes. We are grateful to Professor Michiel Hazewinkel for including this book in his series and to Dr. David Larner of Kluwer for his continuous interest and support to this project.

Nonlinear Optics 4th Edition

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Nicolaas Bloembergen, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1981), wrote Nonlinear Optics in 1964, when the field of nonlinear optics was only three years old. The available literature has since grown by at least three orders of magnitude. The vitality of Nonlinear Optics is evident from the still-growing number of scientists and engineers engaged in the study of new nonlinear phenomena and in the development of new nonlinear devices in the field of opto-electronics. This monograph should be helpful in providing a historical introduction and a general background of basic ideas both for experts specializing in this discipline and for scientists and students who wish to become acquainted with it.This is the fourth reprint and includes new references to the recent literature.
