During the last century China has undergone more change than during any other period in its long and turbulent history. This book reinterprets classical Chinese philosophical tradition along the conceptual line of human dignity. Through extensive textual evidence, it illustrates that classical Confucianism, Mohism and Daoism contained rich notions of dignity, which laid the foundation for human rights and political liberty in China, even though, historically, liberal democracy failed to grow out of the authoritarian soil in China. The book critically examines the causes that might have prevented the classical schools from developing a liberal tradition, while affirming their positive contributions to the human dignity concept. Analysing the inadequacies of the western concept of human dignity, the text covers relevant teachings of Kongzi, Mengzi, Xunzi, Mozi, Laozi and Zhuangzi (in comparison with Rousseau). While the Confucian notions of humanity (Ren), righteousness (Yi), and gentleman (Junzi) bear most directly on the conception of dignity, Mohism and Daoism provide salutary corrections to the ossification of the orthodox Confucian practice (Li).

Preface: The last decade or so has seen the emergence of a fruitful cooperation between German and Chinese scholars. The relationships between classical Chinese philosophy and classical German philosophy are being scrutinized during conferences which have taken place both in Germany and China. Initially, the issues under discussion were of a doctrinal nature. A conference in Cologne in 2011 dealt with the foundations of knowledge and ethics in Chinese and European philosophy (published as Metaphysical Foundations of Knowledge and Ethics in Chinese and European Philosophy, eds. Yi Guo, Sasa Josifovic, and Asuman Lätzer-Lasar, Paderborn 2013). In 2012, Foundations of Reason and Morality in Confucianism and German Idealism were discussed at a conference in Tutzing (published as volume no. 15 in the book series World Philosophies in Dialogue, eds. Claudia Bickmann † and Michael Spieker, Nordhausen 2020). In the course of these explorations, it turned out that Chinese and German philosophy have a surprising amount of fundamental philosophical themes in common. ...

This book makes Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM) intelligible to those who are not familiar with the tradition, many of whom may choose to dismiss it off-hand or to assess it negatively) . Keekok Lee uses two related strategies: arguing that all science and therefore medicine cannot be understood without excavating its philosophical presuppositions and showing what those presuppositions are in the case of CCM compared with those of biomedicine. Such excavations enable Lee in turn to demonstrate the following theses: (1) the metaphysical/ontological core of a medical system entails its own methodology, how to understand, diagnose and treat an illness/disease; (2) CCM rests on process-ontology, is Wholist, its general mode of thinking is Contextual-dyadic, its implicit logic is multi-valent, its model of causality is non-linear and multi-factorial; (3) Biomedicine (in the main) rests on thing-ontology and dualism, is Reductionist, its logic is classical bi-valent, its model of causality is linear and monofactorial; (4) hence to condemn CCM as “unscientific”/”pseudo-scientific”/plain “mumbo-jumbo” while privileging Biomedicine as the Gold Standard of scientificity is as absurd as to judge a cat to be inferior to a dog, using the criteria of “goodness” embodied in a dog-show.
