BOOK EXCERPT:
The world is witnessing climate change. As responsible citizens of planet earth, we can actively participate in the co-creation of actionable knowledge and solutions. There may not be a single and linear pathway to adaptation anymore. This book explores multiple and iterative pathways of adapting to climate change and its impacts. Climate Change and Adaptive Innovation introduces an adaptive innovation model that has its premise on core values of justice, care and solidarity. Navigating collectively through shared conversations and dialogic processes, this model showcases how we could embark on an enduring journey where diverse actors could collaboratively make informed choices and take necessary actions to enhance the safety and security of their lived environment. Rooted in action research, it is envisaged that this model could enable us to facilitate the designing and implementation of people-centred ethical adaptation projects. This book will be of interest to social workers, social scientists and development practitioners who are engaged in the field of climate justice, adaptation, social innovation and sustainable livelihoods. Social work educators and students will certainly draw inspiration from the stories that are shared in this book. It will further motivate many transdisciplinary professionals to engage with action research as a method of innovation, reflection and practice

BOOK EXCERPT:
Leading up to the financial crisis of 2008 and onwards, the shortcomings of traditional models of regional economic and environmental development had become increasingly evident. Rooted in the idea that ‘policy’ is an encumbrance to free markets, the stress on supply-side smoothing measures such as clusters and an over reliance on venture capital, the inadequacy of existing orthodoxies has come to be replaced by the notion of Transversality. This approach has three strong characteristics that differentiate it from its failing predecessor. First, as the name implies, it seeks to finesse horizontal knowledge interactions as well as vertical ones, thus building ‘platforms’ of industrial interaction. Secondly, it is not a supply, but a demand side model in which needs-driven innovation rather than pure market competition prevails. Finally, it is ongoing through recessionary times, being more robust than over-specialised approaches to economic growth. The intellectual origins of Transversality lie in an aspiration to promote eco-innovation, one of the key hopes of assisting Western regional and national economies to re-balance and escape recession. The policy models of key regional exponents of the concept are explored and their goals achievement is assessed. An array of policy instruments and measures is presented for hands-on policy implementation. The book will be of vital interest to academics as teachers and researchers as well as policy advisers and public servants.

The changing climatic scenario has affected crop production in the adverse ways, and the impact of it on agriculture is now emerging as a major priority among crop science researchers. Agriculture in this changing climatic scenario faces multiple diverse challenges due to a wide array of demands. Climate-resilient agriculture is the need of the hour in many parts of the world. Understanding the adverse effects of climatic change on crop growth and development and developing strategies to counter these effects are of paramount importance for a sustainable climate-resilient agriculture. This multiauthored edited book brings out sound climate-resilient agriculture strategies that have a strong basic research foundation. We have attempted to bridge information from various diverse agricultural disciplines, such as soil science, agronomy, plant breeding, and plant protection, which can be used to evolve a need-based technology to combat the climatic change in agriculture.
