National and global security can be assessed in many ways but one underlying factor for all humanity is access to reliable sources of water for drinking, sanitation, food production and manufacturing industry. In many parts of the world, population growth and an escalating demand for water already threaten the sustainable management of available water supplies. Global warming, climate change and rising sea level are expected to intensify the resource sustainability issue in many water-stressed regions of the world by reducing the annual supply of renewable fresh water and promoting the intrusion of saline water into aquifers along sea coasts, where 50% of the global population reside. Pro-active resource management decisions are required, but such efforts would be futile unless reliable predictions can be made about the impact of the changing global conditions on the water cycle and the quality and availability of critical water reserves. Addressing this wide spectrum of issues, a team of expert authors discusses here the impacts of climate change on the global water resources, the long-term resource management goals at global and local scales, the data requirements and the scientific and technical advances necessary to mitigate the associated impacts.

- Water resources management should be assessed under climate change conditions, as historic data cannot replicate future climatic conditions. - Climate change impacts on water resources are bound to affect all water uses, i.e., irrigated agriculture, domestic and industrial water supply, hydropower generation, and environmental flow (of streams and rivers) and water level (of lakes). - Bottom-up approaches, i.e., the forcing of hydrologic simulation models with climate change models’ outputs, are the most common engineering practices and considered as climate-resilient water management approaches. - Hydrologic simulations forced by climate change scenarios derived from regional climate models (RCMs) can provide accurate assessments of the future water regime at basin scales. - Irrigated agriculture requires special attention as it is the principal water consumer and alterations of both precipitation and temperature patterns will directly affect agriculture yields and incomes. - Integrated water resources management (IWRM) requires multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, with climate change to be an emerging cornerstone in the IWRM concept.

This Special Issue explores the cross-disciplinary approaches, methodologies, and applications of socio-environmental vulnerability assessment that can be incorporated into sustainable management. The volume comprises 20 different points of view, which cover environmental protection and development, urban planning, geography, public policymaking, participation processes, and other cross-disciplinary fields. The articles collected in this volume come from all over the world and present the current state of the world’s environmental and social systems at a local, regional, and national level. New approaches and analytical tools for the assessment of environmental and social systems are studied. This book on the sustainable use of soils and water addressed a variety of issues related to the utopian desire for environmental sustainability and the deviations from this scene observed in the real world. Competing interests for land are frequently a factor in land degradation, especially where the adopted land uses do not conform with the land capability (the natural use of soil). The concerns of researchers about these matters are presented in the articles comprising this Special Issue book. Various approaches were used to assess the (im)balance between economic profit and environmental conservation in various regions, in addition to potential routes to bring landscapes back to a sustainable status being disclosed.

This anthology of scholarly essays on climate change, sustainable development, and human security presents a comprehensive analysis of severe global warming and its potential to impact all aspects of human life and security. It has been observed that climate change will most drastically impact poor tropical regions of the world for various reasons. The main focus of this collection of essays is to analyze the pro and cons of the global warming and climate change debate among scholars, policymakers, and scientists, as well as to examine the potential adverse impact of global warming/climate change on social and economic development and human security (food, health, immigration etc.). Much controversy exists on the topic, and many scientific reports issued by think tanks, United Nations, groups of scientists, NGOs, environmentalists, and policymakers are concerned about it. An extensive discussion and review of literature sets the tone and framework for the volume, and facilitates the volume’s analyses of the relationship between prevailing climate change/global warming models and their ability to provide us information on the topic. Exclusion of North America is deliberate; included are case studies from countries in Asia, Latin America, Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

According to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), water is the limiting agent in sustainable development and is critical to all socio-economic aspects of human welfare, including security, energy, food, and health issues. It is essential for the production and preservation of foodstuff, is a host of benefits and services for people, and plays a key role in strengthening the resilience of social, economic, and environmental systems in the light of rapid and unpredictable changes. However, water can also pose serious challenges to sustainable development if not managed efficiently and equitably. In the past, many water related workshops and conferences have been held all over the world, however, the here reported one is the first expert workshop integrating social-economic and engineering scientists, practitioners, and policy makers in in the field of sustainable water management in Sub-Saharan Africa region. In addition, the subject of the workshop “Sustainable Use of Water Resources” addresses the challenges outlined in the Kenyan Vision 2030 programs. Additionally, Africa’s rising population is the driving force of the demand for water and accelerates the degradation of water resources in many countries on the continent. Current research has projected that almost all African countries will face either absolute or economic water scarcity by 2025. The main objective of the workshop was to share experiences, knowledge, and research outcomes among experts of water and environment, and to discuss major problems and challenges in the field of sustainable water management in Sub-Saharan Africa Region. It also aimed (i) to improve the understandings of the interrelationship between SDGs and the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM); to identify the current trends in water management practices and their shortcomings; (iii) to establish a Sub-Saharan Africa Network of water experts; and (iv) to identify promising areas of future research for the Sub-Saharan Africa Region.
