Challenges In Rheumatology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Rheumatology is a subspecialty of medicine that focuses on the biology, cause, diagnosis and the treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal and other systemic diseases. The field of rheumatology is expanding rapidly and several very exciting developments have occurred during the recent years. Firstly, there has been a new dramatic understanding of the nature of inflammation and the possibility of specifically regulating the aberrant immune inflammatory response. Secondly, an understanding of pathogenesis has lead to the development of new, more targeted therapies. Challenges in Rheumatology has assembled an impressive group of international experts who have studied specific aspects of certain rheumatic diseases and have extensive experience either in pathophysiology, or with the in-depth diagnosis and/or management of rheumatic patients. They communicate their knowledge and experience to the reader in chapters that are conveniently organized as pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and diagnosis of selected rheumatic diseases, medical and perioperative orthopedic management, and the economic impact of rheumatic diseases. We hope that this book will help trainees become better physicians and scientists, and that it will help practicing rheumatologists to provide better care, and ultimately, improve the quality of life of our patients.

Role Of Medicinal Plants In Autoimmune Diseases

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The immune system is a group of complex biological structures and processes in an organism which gives protection against wide range of pathogenic organisms and simultaneously distinguishes these pathogens from organism's own healthy cells and tissues, thus maintaining homeostasis in the body. It has been an age-old practice to use extracts and other parts of various plants in treating many diseases. Several plants contain various pharmacologically active substances, which can be used to treat different diseases. Among these medicinal plants many have shown good immunomodulatory properties and could act as natural immunosuppressant agents in treating autoimmune disorders. In 12 chapters, besides covering the basic concepts of immune system and its function, Autoimmune diseases and Medicinal Plants provides a comprehensive knowledge of autoimmune diseases and the role of various medicinal plant products in their treatment - Elucidates in-depth knowledge on the basics of Immunology, as well as the various autoimmune disorders and the medicinal plant extracts which could be an alternative and safe approach for their treatment and management - Provides updated content on the role of different medicinal plants in curing autoimmune diseases - Includes a section at the end of each autoimmune disease, giving a comparison between the treatment with conventional drugs and the medicinal plant products - Explains the benefits and risks of both treatment regimens in comprehensive, yet easily understandable way

Oxford Textbook Of Vasculitis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The third edition of this definitive and highly-regarded reference work provides a comprehensive review of vasculitis, a fascinating array of life-threatening and minor conditions caused by inflammatory syndromes and diseases that affect the blood vessels. The text uniquely brings together concepts from both the biological and clinical aspects of vasculitis. Research in clinical immunology now invigorates the entire area of vasculitis and shapes a rational approach to pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment, which is the substance of this text. Over 40 chapters cover known vasculitic conditions, and are illustrated with over 250 full-colour photographs of clinical and pathologic findings, diagrams, and tables. Separate sections are devoted to basic science, clinical manifestations commonly seen in vasculitis, imaging and percutaneous interventions, individual diseases and syndromes, as well as conditions which can mimic vasculitis. Many of the conditions are rare, and it is the exceptional clinician who has much experience with more than a few of these; thus, the invaluable experience of the international team of authors makes this edition truly indispensible. Now in the Oxford Textbooks in Rheumatology series, this new edition of Vasculitis is published with a concurrent online version, which features access to the full content of the textbook, contains links from the references to primary research journal articles, allows full text searches, and provides access to figures and tables that can be downloaded to PowerPoint. Adverse Effects Of Vaccines

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In 1900, for every 1,000 babies born in the United States, 100 would die before their first birthday, often due to infectious diseases. Today, vaccines exist for many viral and bacterial diseases. The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, passed in 1986, was intended to bolster vaccine research and development through the federal coordination of vaccine initiatives and to provide relief to vaccine manufacturers facing financial burdens. The legislation also intended to address concerns about the safety of vaccines by instituting a compensation program, setting up a passive surveillance system for vaccine adverse events, and by providing information to consumers. A key component of the legislation required the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to collaborate with the Institute of Medicine to assess concerns about the safety of vaccines and potential adverse events, especially in children. Adverse Effects of Vaccines reviews the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence regarding adverse health events associated with specific vaccines covered by the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), including the varicella zoster vaccine, influenza vaccines, the hepatitis B vaccine, and the human papillomavirus vaccine, among others. For each possible adverse event, the report reviews peer-reviewed primary studies, summarizes their findings, and evaluates the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence. It finds that while no vaccine is 100 percent safe, very few adverse events are shown to be caused by vaccines. In addition, the evidence shows that vaccines do not cause several conditions. For example, the MMR vaccine is not associated with autism or childhood diabetes. Also, the DTaP vaccine is not associated with diabetes and the influenza vaccine given as a shot does not exacerbate asthma. Adverse Effects of Vaccines will be of special interest to the National Vaccine Program Office, the VICP, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vaccine safety researchers and manufacturers, parents, caregivers, and health professionals in the private and public sectors.
