BOOK EXCERPT:

Originally published in 1991 as part of the Tavistock Classics in the History of Psychiatry series, this re-edition of J-M. Charcot’s Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System provides a unique opportunity to examine the work of one of the last century’s most controversial and admired physicians. Widely esteemed for his work in neuropathology, Charcot was also an innovator in the study of hysteria, making important contributions to its study in both women and men. The Clinical Lectures reproduced here are especially important for two key reasons. First, they provide insight into Charcot’s often neglected study of male hysteria, especially traumatic shock, as well as, hysteria among children. Secondly, they give an opportunity to examine his clinical method and style. His presentations and scholarly compilations greatly influenced an entire generation of French and other physicians interested in the study of the ‘unconscious’ during the turn of the century. The introduction, which precedes the work, places the volume in its social, political and historical context. It highlights the key features of the historiographical debate surrounding Charcot, which ranges in scope from the social and intellectual history of the Third Republic through that of early psychoanalysis. It then proceeds with an examination of the key themes – both substantive and methodological – underlying Charcot’s researches, providing both a general entrée into the history of medicine and society in this period, as well as an explication du texte which carefully analyses the lectures themselves.

The Oxford Handbook Of Phenomenological Psychopathology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The field of phenomenological psychopathology (PP) is concerned with exploring and describing the individual experience of those suffering from mental disorders. Whilst there is often an understandable emphasis within psychiatry on diagnosis and treatment, the subjective experience of the individual is frequently overlooked. Yet a patient's own account of how their illness affects their thoughts, values, consciousness, and sense of self, can provide important insights into their condition - insights that can complement the more empirical findings from studies of brain function or behaviour. The Oxford Handbook of Phenomenological Psychopathology is the first ever comprehensive review of the field. It considers the history of PP, its methodology, key concepts, and includes a section exploring individual experiences within schizophrenia, depression, borderline personality disorder, OCD, and phobia. In addition it includes chapters on some of the leading figures throughout the history of this field. Bringing together chapters from a global team of leading academics, researchers and practitioners, the book will be valuable for those within the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, and philosophy.

Clinical Lectures On Diseases Of The Nervous System Classic Reprint

BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System The following clinical lectures were delivered at the New York State Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System, and at the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, by Prof. William A. Hammond, and I have collected them with the hope that they might serve to add something to the clinical literature of nervous diseases. I have endeavored to report these lectures in full, and together with the histories of the cases, which were prepared by myself after careful study and prolonged observation, they constitute a clinical volume which, while it does not claim to he exhaustive, or to embrace all the diseases of the nervous system, will nevertheless be found to contain many of the more important affections of the kind that are commonly met with in practice. As these lectures were intended especially for the benefit of students, the chief aim of the author has been to present merely practical views, fully illustrated by cases, with the results derived from treatment, as far as that was possible; and in so doing he has made no attempt to enter into the pathology or the morbid anatomy, but has confined himself to a full consideration of the symptoms, the causes, and the treatment of each affection, particularly in their relations to the cases. Evaluating Mental Health Practice Psychology Revivals

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

With the emphasis in the 1980s on effectiveness and efficiency in health services, evaluation of practice was increasingly important. This was particularly true of mental health, where many practices were poorly evaluated and therefore might have been of questionable validity. Originally published in 1987, this book reviews the state of evaluative research of mental health programmes at the time, showing how practices can be evaluated and hence improved. A multidisciplinary group of authors, covering psychiatry, clinical psychology, psychiatric nursing, social work and other ‘therapies’, describe previous studies and applications in each discipline, before detailing a case study of their own evaluative work. The book will still have something to offer all professionals concerned with improving the quality of their work in the mental health area.

The State Of Psychiatry Psychology Revivals

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

To mark his retirement in 1966 from the Professorship of Psychiatry at the University of London, and the directorship of the Institute of Psychiatry, the Maudsley Hospital, Professor Lewis’s students edited and prepared an edition of his collected papers, in two volumes. Originally published in 1967 this volume reviews the psychiatric past, surveys the transitional stage psychiatry had reached, and looks forward to the attainable future. The author pays much attention to disputed areas of psychiatric practice and inquiry, how psychiatrists should be chosen and educated, what concepts and methods are required for the furtherance of the subject, what part should social treatment and psychological treatment play. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
