BOOK EXCERPT:
Essentials of Clinical Psychology: An Indian Perspective offers a comprehensive, user-friendly introduction to the theory and practice of clinical psychology within an Indian cultural, social, and educational context. The book starts with an introduction of what Clinical Psychology is and what it looks like in practice, giving a review of its history and contemporary traditions with an essential emphasis on its development from both a global as well as the Indian perspective. The following chapters cover a range of topics such as research methods, mental health and hygiene, and clinical psychology functions and training. The second half of the book then focuses on the classification of mental disorders for knowledge in diagnosing and treating patients, with chapters devoted to the description of various types of behavioral and mental disorders appearing in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Disorders examined include eating disorders, sleep disorders, degenerative disorders, psychotic disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Each chapter ends with chapter summaries, review questions, and recommended readings. Each chapter has its sectionwise summaries and ends with review questions and cited references. This textbook will serve as a must-have reference for all undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in Clinical Psychology, as well as for candidates selecting Psychology as their optional paper in competitive examinations. BOOK EXCERPT:
Two leading oncologists, along with experts spanning several medical disciplines, shed light on the global pandemic of cancer, particularly the difference in diagnosis, treatment, and care between global communities. Despite advancing globalization and amazing breakthroughs in modern medicine, developing countries continue to struggle with the prevention and treatment of the most common killer in the world today—cancer. Logistical barriers, scarceness of resources, and economic hardships in these regions make the screening, detection, and care of this disease difficult at best. This book is the only one of its kind to review the pandemic of cancer from a global and epidemiological perspective. The work is presented in three sections, focusing on key issues in cancer management, treatment of specific types of the disease, and the difference in medical care between low-, medium-, and high-resource countries. Chapters address the history, incidence, and treatment across nations; presiding cultural attitudes which may delay or prevent treatment in many parts of the world; and the geopolitics of cancer care and funding. Patients and caregivers from all around the globe explain the daily challenges of living with the disease in their nation.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Concepts like Health and Well-being are not exclusive products of the Western culture. Research has widely demonstrated that the representation of the body and of its pathologies, as well as treatment and healing practices vary across cultures in relation to social norms and beliefs. The culture of India is a melting pot of nine main Darshanas, or philosophical systems, that share the common core of a realization of the self in society. India’s traditional health system, Ayurveda, is a result of the practical application of the Darshanas to the observation of human nature and behavior. Ayurveda conceptualizes health, disease and well-being as multidimensional aspects of life, and it seeks to preserve a balance in individuals among their biological features, their psychological features and their environmental demands. The Ayurveda approach to health is remarkably similar to the eudaimonic conceptualization of well-being proposed by positive psychology, and the basic tenets of Ayurveda are deeply consistent with the latest developments of modern physics, which stresses the substantial interconnectedness among natural phenomena and their substrates. This text shows how the approach to health developed in Ayurveda can be fruitfully integrated in a general view of health and well-being that encompasses cultural and ideological boundaries. Specifically, it details the conceptualization of health as an optimal and mindful interaction between individuals and their environment.
