BOOK EXCERPT:

The Trial of Sunny Ang (1973). Bankrupt and desperately needing money, this is the true story of how a brilliant Singaporean psychopath tried to commit the perfect crime. This landmark trial was the first of its kind in Singapore—without a body, the prosecution had no medical evidence nor witnesses to claim unnatural death, so they caught Ang in a chain of circumstantial evidence he could not break, which ultimately led to his sentence. Pulau Senang—The Experiment That Failed (1980). In 1965, 18 men, all convicted criminals were sent to death for murder. They were to be a haunting testimony to the failure of a bold experiment to transform Pulau Senang into a gaol without bars and a sad realization that ‘creative work in healthy surroundings’ may not reform seasoned criminals. Reconstructing the events leading to the tragedy and trial, Pulau Senang attempts to throw some light to a question that has never been answered satisfactorily: Why did the experiment fail?

Cold-blooded crime record: Uncle rapes and kills niece to take pictures (2) Sydney, Australia At 8 am on April 29, the police issued a press bulletin confirming that the naked female body was a 25-year-old Chinese student Leng Mengmei. At 1:20 pm, the Campsie Police searched Leng Mengmei's apartment in Kensi and arrested Leng Mengmei's uncle Barrett for murder. Police found in Barrett's mobile phone photos and videos of Leng Mengmei's death, including a few, which took pictures of dead body. Some photos and videos were taken in Leng Mengmei's room on April 22, 2016. In the morning, only Leng Mengmei and uncle were at home. Barrett went to Leng Mengmei's room, uniformed her, undressed, and took 19 photos. In the other 13 photos, Leng Mengmei was naked, her mouth was plugged with white cloth, and her mouth was sealed with black tape. her hands were tied behind , face full of panic and fear, eyes full of fear. Police believe that Leng Mengmei was abused by Barrett and was stabbed for more than 40 times. She survived for some time and died in the early hours of April 23. After Barrett took pictures of the body carefully, he left the body in the room for obscenity. Early in the morning on April 24, the body was packed in large plastic bags and moved into the trunk of the car. Barrett carried the corpse to the Central Coast Cape Bream and threw it into the sea. Barrett went to Wollongong to pick up his wife and go home to eat and drink with friends. Barrett's phone has four other videos, shot at different times, ranging from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The content is Leng Mengmei sleeping in her room, Barrett masturbates to Leng Mengmei. There are also several videos of Leng Mengmei's naked shower in the bathroom. In some of the films shot before Leng Mengmei's death, she undressed and bathed in the bathroom. Barrett also filmed the process of installing a pinhole lens behind the cosmetics in the bathroom. A pinhole shot of Leng Mengmei's undressing and bathing. In one of the videos, the shooting time was when Barrett killed Leng Mengmei, and the body was still in the room. Barrett secretly filmed the stepdaughter's bath and sneaked into the stepdaughter's bedroom. On the day Leng Mengmei was imprisoned and abused, her cousin had returned home, but he did not know that Leng Mengmei was locked in an upstairs room. Leng Mengmei's aunt was working in Wollongong when she was murdered. After Leng Mengmei was killed, her mother Zhang Mei flew from Chengdu to Sydney on May 30. Zhang Mei talked about Barrett, blame him as a beast, a pervert. Before her marriage, Barrett lived with her mother, stepfather and grandmother. In the past 27 years, there have been few departures from Sydney. In 2012, 23-year-old Barrett married 44-year-old Leng Mengmei's aunt. When Leng Mengmei first arrived in Australia, she lived in their home. In April 2014, Zhang Mei paid for her daughter's current house. Zhang Mei said, "My sister holds a Hong Kong passport, got married in Hong Kong, has a son and a daughter, went to Australia after divorce. When buying a house for Meng Mei, the main consideration was that she would stay here to work and live. Our two sisters The relationship is very good, and Meng Mei's relationship with her aunt is even better than me. The Chinese like to live with their families and our sisters have moved in together. " "I work in finance and work at a friend's company. Mengmei's father died in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. At the time, Mengmei prepared for the college entrance examination and eventually entered the university. After finishing her sophomore year, she went to study in Australia." "My only daughter, Meng Mei, lives on each other. After she went to study in Australia, I also thought that Australia would live with daughter. Everyone has a dependency. I will sell one of the two houses in Chengdu to pay for the first house in Sydney. Period, the loan is still outstanding. " In 2015, her new home was turned-key, Zhang Mei went to Sydney to help her daughter and sister's family move. In April 2015, Leng Mengmei's mother and aunt paid for a trip to Chengdu with Barrett for more than 20 days. In Christmas 2015, Leng Mengmei celebrated with her aunt and uncle's family. Zhang Mei said, "Barrett originally worked in the IT industry. He married Mengmei's aunt a few years ago. He is not working now. He sleeps during the day and plays games at night. Every time asks about his work,he says," I have already submitted a resume.I haven't responded yet. ”My sister blamed herself for saying that she didn't see the person clearly." Zhang Mei said, "My sister and I were fooled by him. The family lived together, we didn't see any signs of metamorphosis. Looking back now, he is a two-faced person, very perverted and terrifying in private. In front of people, try to disguise himself as a polite person. He has never touched in front of my daughter before. My daughter, my sister and I often keep in communication, saying anything. If he is wrong,my daughter told us long ago that he was hiding too deeply. " On April 30, Barrett appeared in the Parramatta Bail Tribunal for trial via video link, remained silent during the period. The court ruled against bail. Leng Mengmei's aunt visited Barrett in prison persuaded him to plead guilty, but he remained silent without saying a word. On May 4, 2016, Barrett was tried in Burwood District Court. Leng Mengmei's mother, Zhang Mei, was accompanied by relatives and friends to hearing. Zhang Mei frowned, her lips clenched, the pressure and pain she suffered was beyond words. She has stated that her daughter is the life of her after her husband died. She has only one child and has given everything for her. Now her daughter is gone and her life is completely ruined. There is no death penalty in Australia, Zhang Mei hopes that the killer will be sentenced to life imprisonment. Zhang Mei said, "My daughter is gone. I will do my best to ensure that he is sentenced to life imprisonment. People like him are of no use to society. He will hurt others when released keep him in prison for life. Think about it. " Barrett's defence lawyer said he would not plead guilty. Lawyers said Barrett had been held in a remand centre at Silverwater Prison in West Sydney since his arrest in May this year. There were thousands of people awaiting trial there, which was very crowded, the temperature in the jail in January reached over forty degrees. Barrett was unable to get along well with his inmates in prison, and was in a very uneasy and restless state. No police noticed him, making his prison life even more unpleasant. The lawyer said that the prison environment was too bad, and he hoped that his client could be transferred in the near future. The transfer did not have any impact on the outcome of the trial. Because Yinshui Prison canceled Barrett's psychiatric test, lawyers demanded that the trial be postponed. The court decided to postpone the trial until June 29. At 4 pm on May 6, Leng Mengmei's mother Zhang Mei held a press conference. Leng Mengmei's aunt said in an interview with an Australian Chinese news website earlier that without her family's knowledge, Leng Mengmei's Facebook page showed that she recently had a white boyfriend. Leng Mengmei's aunt said the white man looked bad and lived in Wollongong. She said that if this boyfriend had bad behavior, Leng Mengmei would resist, she had never made a boyfriend for the first time. The above statement is reminiscent of Leng Mengmei's aunt intending to acquit her husband. Zhang Mei specifically clarified: "The case of Mengmei's killing is currently being tried. Unreasonable guesses about some unreported reports and irresponsible deceased people outside the society make me deeply immersed in the pain of losing my daughter. Life is hard to accept. The pain is more than bereavement. I only hope that at this moment, everyone can understand my feelings and respect my privacy. There are many organizations and individuals in the community who have expressed their concern and condolences to me in various ways and channels. I am deeply grateful. Please accept my most sincere thanks. " Police said Aunt Leng Mengmei's statement was not the main investigation direction.

Cold Blooded Crime Record Uncle Rapes And Kills Niece To Take Pictures 3 Sydney Australia

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Cold-blooded crime record: Uncle rapes and kills niece to take pictures (3) Sydney, Australia On the morning of May 11th, Leng Mengmei's memorial service was held in a Chinese church in Fairfield, Sydney. It was chaired by Rev. Lin Yiling of the Australian Cross International Church. More than 30 friends came to pray and put their grief. In Leng Mengmei's favorite song, "A Simple Song", a lively and beautiful life-long video of Leng Mengmei was played live. Later, Leng Mengmei's IELTS teacher and friend William told about Leng Mengmei in his eyes: "She is the best student I have ever taught. Sunshine and cheerfulness will always leave you sad and bring happiness to others. " On June 12, Leng Mengmei's ashes were buried in a cemetery in his hometown of Chengdu. On June 29, the case was tried in the Burwood District Court, Barrett's lawyers defended him "innocence", he did not appear. The 27-year-old defendant, Barrett, was charged with 27 counts, including: charged with murdering his niece from April 21 to 24, 25-year-old Leng Mengmei, five counts of wrongdoing, 17 counts Allegations of permission to film the private parts of others, two allegations of unauthorized installation of video recording equipment, etc. The police had comprehensive evidence, Barrett's "innocent defense" failed. On August 16th, Barrett pleaded guilty to the court through a video in Yinshui Prison pleaded not guilty to murder, deprivation of personal liberty and three counts of indecent assault. After Barrett confessed to killing, he hid the body at home for two days, used the car body to throw the body to the Central Coast snapper to the water jet. On October 6, 2017, the case was first tried in the New South Wales High Court. Barrett's lawyer in court, say that the client must undergo a psychological examination and evaluation, hopes the judge will postpone the sentence until May next year. The judge in charge of the case, Johnson, said that the case "cannot be extended for so long", announced that sentencing will be sentenced next month, the mental assessment materials must be submitted before. On December 13, the case held a sentencing hearing in the High Court of NSW. Barrett was charged with a total of 19 counts, in addition to murder, including the unauthorized photographing of private parts of another person and the possession of these pornographic materials. Barrett pleaded guilty to all charges in the court. He kept confessing and crying during the defense, claiming that the filming of Leng Mengmei's private parts was for sexual satisfaction. He said, "I have done something irreversible. This is my deserved deed. I promised to take care of her, but I betrayed my two families and her. I hate depriving others of my life and I want a family and children. I can't believe I took her life. I feel self-disgusted. " "I'm depressed because I haven't worked, I haven't had sex with my wife for a long time, I watched many Asian porn videos, have sexual fantasies about Leng Mengmei and my stepdaughter." "My wife is a prostitute, and she also sells drugs. I spend thousands of dollars on drugs every week. The methamphetamine was given to me by my wife. The drug was consumed on the day of the incident. People are uncontrollable and amnestic. I wouldn't have done this kind of bad behavior without drugs. " "After the effectiveness of the drug weakened, I found that I was soaked in sweat and I felt like I woke up from a dream and I didn't remember killing her. I have no sexual fantasies about the victim. I just remember the quarrel, the blood in the mirror and the sink, found the inside of the phone. There are disgusting photos and videos. " "I am not fit to be put in jail again because I was marked as a child offender by other prisoners and was almost killed in prison." The defense lawyer pointed out that Barrett was affected by methamphetamine when he committed the crime. He had certain "difficulty in social integration" and lacked social connections. Counsel believes that there are many ways to treat Barrett's sexual irregularities. The prosecution responded specifically to Barrett's defence lawyer. The prosecution's lawyer said Barrett had not taken methamphetamine three weeks before the crime, and there was no sign of methamphetamine being affected at the time of the crime. He said that the killing for drug use was only to reduce the penalty. Barrett explained to the court that he did not come out to confess the crime at the first time, because after killing Leng Mengmei, methamphetamine temporarily lost this part of his memory. Forensic psychologist Dr. Falster countered thatthe amount used by the suspects did not cause memory loss, Barrett "just appealed and defended himself." From the killing to the disposal of the corpse, such as tying up the victim and taking naked pictures, it proves that the killer was "awake and capable". The shooting of crime scenes can be interpreted as staying watched later. This type of sexual and violent crimes is relatively more likely to be committed again in the future. Prosecutors believe that Barrett should be punished with life imprisonment for his heinous crimes. Leng Mengmei's mother, Zhang Mei, asked her friend to read a statement on her behalf, which stated, "In April 2016, my dream was completely shattered. I still cannot accept Barrett to this day. Cruelly tortured and killed my daughter. My daughter was torn apart by my family, Mengmei's aunt has always felt guilty of her husband's crimes. My aunt said that if she was at home at the time, this might not happen. Hope the judge sentenced the murderer For life imprisonment, the killer should spend the rest of his life in prison until his death. " At 12:40 am on December 15, 2017, the Supreme Court of New South Wales announced that Leng Mengmei's Australian uncle Barrett had been convicted of murder and sentenced to 46 years in prison. He could not be released on parole for 34.5 years. Royal prosecutor Quinnion read the post-mortem report in court. Leng Mengmei suffered huge pain and fear before she died. She was stabbed with 40 swords. The fatal sword almost penetrated the neck and was extremely cruel. Leng Mengmei did not immediately die after receiving a fatal blow. The murder weapon was a sharp knife with a blade width of about two centimeters. The murderer carefully cleaned the scene after the crime. The police have not found the murder weapon so far. Barrett previously claimed that his wife provided him with methamphetamine, which led to his loss of control and memory. Prosecutor Quinnyn said that a large number of photos and videos were corroborating evidence, a series of actions proved that Barrett was "savvy and capable". Barrett was expressionless during the trial. When the judge pronounced his conclusions, there was no response.

Surrealism And The Art Of Crime

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Corpses mark surrealism's path through the twentieth century, providing material evidence of the violence in modern life. Though the shifting group of poets, artists, and critics who made up the surrealist movement were witness to total war, revolutionary violence, and mass killing, it was the tawdry reality of everyday crime that fascinated them. Jonathan P. Eburne shows us how this focus reveals the relationship between aesthetics and politics in the thought and artwork of the surrealists and establishes their movement as a useful platform for addressing the contemporary problem of violence, both individual and political. In a book strikingly illustrated with surrealist artworks and their sometimes gruesome source material, Eburne addresses key individual works by both better-known surrealist writers and artists (including André Breton, Louis Aragon, Aimé Césaire, Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, Max Ernst, and Salvador Dalí) and lesser-known figures (such as René Crevel, Simone Breton, Leonora Carrington, Benjamin Péret, and Jules Monnerot). For Eburne "the art of crime" denotes an array of cultural production including sensationalist journalism, detective mysteries, police blotters, crime scene photos, and documents of medical and legal opinion as well as the roman noir, in particular the first crime novel of the American Chester Himes. The surrealists collected and scrutinized such materials, using them as the inspiration for the outpouring of political tracts, pamphlets, and artworks through which they sought to expose the forms of violence perpetrated in the name of the state, its courts, and respectable bourgeois values. Concluding with the surrealists' quarrel with the existentialists and their bitter condemnation of France's anticolonial wars, Surrealism and the Art of Crime establishes surrealism as a vital element in the intellectual, political, and artistic history of the twentieth century.
