A guide to thirty-five creative assignments for pairs and groups Collaborative Learning Techniques is the bestseller that college and university faculty around the world have used to help them make the most of small group learning. A mountain of evidence shows that students who learn in small groups together exhibit higher academic achievement, motivation, and satisfaction than those who don't. This revised and expanded edition includes: Additional techniques, with an all-new chapter on using games to provide exciting, current, technologically-sophisticated curricula A section on effective online implementation for each of the thirty-five techniques Significantly expanded pedagogical rationale and updates on the latest research showing how and why collaborative learning works Examples for implementing collaborative learning techniques in a variety of learning environments, including large lecture classes and "flipped" classes Expanded guidance on how to solve common problems associated with group work The authors guide instructors through all aspects of group work, providing a solid grounding in what to do, how to do it, and why it is important for student learning. The detailed procedures in Collaborative Learning Techniques will help teachers make sure group activities go smoothly, no matter the size or delivery method of their classes. BOOK EXCERPT:
Adaptation and personalization have been extensively studied in CSCL research community aiming to design intelligent systems that adaptively support eLearning processes and collaboration. Yet, with the fast development in Internet technologies, especially with the emergence of new data technologies and the mobile technologies, new opportunities and perspectives are opened for advanced adaptive and personalized systems. Adaptation and personalization are posing new research and development challenges to nowadays CSCL systems. In particular, adaptation should be focused in a multi-dimensional way (cognitive, technological, context-aware and personal). Moreover, it should address the particularities of both individual learners and group collaboration. As a consequence, the aim of this book is twofold. On the one hand, it discusses the latest advances and findings in the area of intelligent adaptive and personalized learning systems. On the other hand it analyzes the new implementation perspectives for intelligent adaptive learning and collaborative systems that are brought by the advances in scripting languages, IMS LD, educational modeling languages and learning activity management systems. Given the variety of learning needs as well as the existence of different technological solutions, the book exemplifies the methodologies and best practices through several case studies and adaptive real-world collaborative learning scenarios, which show the advancement in the field of analysis, design and implementation of intelligent adaptive and personalized systems.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The ability to collaborate is becoming more and more important in today's world in which tasks are getting more and more interdisciplinary and complicated to accomplish. It is, therefore, essential to prepare students on collaborative tasks while they are in school so that they can become competent team workers when they enter the workforce. Collaborative learning has the promise of active construction of knowledge, enhanced problem articulation and promotion for social interaction and has also been demonstrated to provide better outcomes than individual work in numerous studies. This new book gathers the latest research from around the globe in the study of collaborative learning and its application in early childhood education, pedagogical reasoning, undergraduate studies and computer research.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Pedagogy - Job Education, Further Education, University of Dodoma (College of Education), language: English, abstract: Cooperative Learning has been recommended and mandated as the most useful teaching and learning method by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training in Tanzania. Perhaps, operating in consistence with the challenges of learner-centred education, the ministry came out with the Teacher Education Programme (TEP) as a professional support to college tutors. Most instructors of teachers colleges in Tanzania have taken the TEP which emphasizes the learner- centred ideology; a paradigm shift away from the traditional teacher-centred education. Capitalizing on quantitative and qualitatative data, this paper makes a critical reflection on the learning experiences through cooperative teaching methods in Tanzania primary schools. The paper is divided into five parts. The first part examines cooperative learning as a learner- centred activity. The second part explores both the roles of teachers and students in a cooperative teaching and learning setting. The third part highlights the measured learning effects through cooperative teaching methods. The fourth part is the author‟s reflections on his learning experiences through Cooperative Learning and Teaching Methods. The fifth part is a conclusion of the paper.
