A survey of the areas where combinatorial methods have proven especially fruitful: topology and combinatorial group theory, knot theory, 3-manifolds, homotopy theory and infinite dimensional topology, and four manifolds and algebraic surfaces.

Combinatorics plays a prominent role in contemporary mathematics, due to the vibrant development it has experienced in the last two decades and its many interactions with other subjects. This book arises from the INdAM conference "CoMeTA 2013 - Combinatorial Methods in Topology and Algebra,'' which was held in Cortona in September 2013. The event brought together emerging and leading researchers at the crossroads of Combinatorics, Topology and Algebra, with a particular focus on new trends in subjects such as: hyperplane arrangements; discrete geometry and combinatorial topology; polytope theory and triangulations of manifolds; combinatorial algebraic geometry and commutative algebra; algebraic combinatorics; and combinatorial representation theory. The book is divided into two parts. The first expands on the topics discussed at the conference by providing additional background and explanations, while the second presents original contributions on new trends in the topics addressed by the conference.

Jain's 80th birthday, on Categorical, Homological and Combinatorial Methods in Algebra held from March 16–18, 2018, at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. The articles contained in this volume aim to showcase the current state of art in categorical, homological and combinatorial aspects of algebra.

Although Bessel functions are among the most widely used functions in applied mathematics, this book is essentially the first to present a calculus associated with this class of functions. The author obtains a generalized umbral calculus associated with the Euler operator and its associated Bessel eigenfunctions for each positive value of an index parameter. For one particular value of this parameter, the functions and operators can be associated with the radial parts of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space objects. Some of the results of this book are in part extensions of the work of Rota and his co-workers on the ordinary umbral calculus and binomial enumeration. The author also introduces a wide variety of new polynomial sequences together with their groups and semigroup compositional properties. Generalized Bernoulli, Euler, and Stirling numbers associated with Bessel functions and the corresponding classes of polynomials are also studied. The book is intended for mathematicians and physicists at the research level in special function theory.

This volume contains the proceedings of the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference on Algebraic Geometry, held in Sundance, Utah in July 1988. The conference focused on algebraic curves and related varieties. Some of the papers collected here represent lectures delivered at the conference, some report on research done during the conference, while others describe related work carried out elsewhere.

This 1985 AMS Summer Research Conference brought together mathematicians interested in multiparameter bifurcation with scientists working on fluid instabilities and chemical reactor dynamics. This proceedings volume demonstrates the mutually beneficial interactions between the mathematical analysis, based on genericity, and experimental studies in these fields. Various papers study steady state bifurcation, Hopf bifurcation to periodic solutions, interactions between modes, dynamic bifurcations, and the role of symmetries in such systems. A section of abstracts at the end of the volume provides guides and pointers to the literature. The mathematical study of multiparameter bifurcation leads to a number of theoretical and practical difficulties, many of which are discussed in these papers. The articles also describe theoretical and experimental studies of chemical reactors, which provide many situations in which to test the mathematical ideas. Other test areas are found in fluid dynamics, particularly in studying the routes to chaos in two laboratory systems, Taylor-Couette flow between rotating cylinders and Rayleigh-Benard convection in a fluid layer.
