BOOK EXCERPT:
Popular author with devoted following Non-threatening way to start conversations about Jesus The inimitable Barbara Crafton describes the birth of this book: “We have to learn about Jesus from somebody. Somebody has to tell us. Jesus has been told to people by other people for better than twenty centuries. There are things you only have to hear once and you’ve got it . . . Jesus is different. Him, we have to tell and re-tell. We mostly experience him in each other: in our ways of telling and, more importantly, in our ways of showing who he is. It is this that has prompted me to write a book about Jesus, something I never expected to do . . . But then this happened: You need to write a book about Jesus. This was not a voice I heard or anything spooky like that. It was just a thought that popped into my head one night when I woke up at about 3 A.M. . . . But this one had an air of urgency. And it refused to leave. You need to write a book about Jesus. Well, all right then.”

BOOK EXCERPT:
Christian evangelism was the ostensible motive for much of the early European interaction with the indigenous population of America. The religious orders of the Catholic Church were the front-line representatives of Western culture and the ones who met indigenous America face-to-face. They were also the primary agents of religious change. In this book, Nicholas Cushner provides the first comprehensive overview and analysis of the American missionary activities of the Jesuits. From the North American encounter with the Indians of Florida in 1565, through Mexico, New France, the Paraguay Reductions, Andean Perus, to contact with Native Americans in Maryland on the eve of the American Revolution, members of the order interacted with both native elites and colonizers. Drawing on the abundant documentation of and scholarship about these encounters, Cushner examines how the Jesuits behaved toward the indigenous population and analyzes the way in which native belief systems were replaced by Christianity. He seeks to understand how and why the initial European-Indian encounter changed not only the religion of the natives, but also their material culture, economic activity, social organization, and even their sexual behavior. Always sensitive to the influence of European "cultural filters" on Jesuit accounts, Cushner attempts as far as possible to discover the authentic voices of the Native Americans with whom they interacted. The result is a fascinating and highly accessible introduction to the earliest colonial encounters in the Americas.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Agony of the Cross Loomed for Jesus "Our brother Jesus was on a reckless course and I had left Jerusalem because I was angry with love for him. I felt helpless to change him and terrified for his life." James and his brothers don't know what to do with Jesus. Is their eldest brother the prophesied Messiah, or is he simply out of his mind? Soon enough, events in Jerusalem during Passover bring James and his family to their knees with sorrow: Jesus has been crucified. As the family and followers of Jesus eventually encounter the risen Lord, they joyfully come to believe in him as the promised Messiah. But their own Jewish leaders want to stamp out the "heretical" believers and the high priest, Caiaphas, takes extreme measures and enlists a young Pharisee named Saul to begin a violent assault against them. In the face of threats, persecution, and death, James, John, Peter, and the rest of the church must rely on raw and untested faith to overcome fearful times and carry out Jesus' command to build a kingdom that will change the world in his name. See Christ's final weeks on earth through the eyes of those closest to him. Witness the early church's exciting first days and then its struggle to remain. Take an up-close and intimate journey into first-century Israel in His Kingdom Come

BOOK EXCERPT:
The present volume is the fifth in a five-volume study of church doctrine. The multivolume set covers the major parts of church doctrine: Canon, God, Creation, Reconciliation, and Redemption. The first volume begins with an introduction to the entire project on why doctrine matters, which stresses the ecumenical, global, and above all biblical horizons of church doctrine as a primary expression of Christian witness. The purpose of this fifth volume is to explicate the full reality of God's redeeming love for the whole creation. In the doctrine of redemption, the church looks forward in hope. Through the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost the church is gathered out of all nations and peoples of the earth, and looks forward to the coming day of final redemption for the whole cosmos. Yet even now, the promise of God's coming is active in the world, rendering the church into a new humanity, establishing a new society, calling every individual to a new life of joy in discipleship. Church doctrine is not a luxury, but a necessity for the living community of faith, by which its witness in word and deed is tested against the one true measure of Christ the risen Lord.
