Thus far, few studies in technical communication have explored the development of mobility technologies, the immense power that highly structured, environmentally significant systems have in the world, or the human-machine interactions that take place in such activities. Applying kinaesthetic rhetoric, a rhetoric that is sensitive to and developed from the mobile, material context of these technologies, Pflugfelder looks at transportation projects such as electric taxi cabs from the turn of the century to modern day, open-source vehicle projects, and a large case study of an autonomous, electric pod car network that ultimately failed. Kinaesthetic rhetoric illuminates how mobility technologies have always been persuasive wherever and whenever linguistic symbol systems and material interactions enroll us, often unconsciously, into regimes of movement and ways of experiencing the world. As Pflugfelder shows, mobility technologies involve networks of sustained arguments that are as durable as the bonds between the actors in their networks.

This book and its companion volume, LNCS 7282 and 7283, constitute the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference, EuroHaptics 2012, held in Tampere, Finland, in June 2012. This volume presents the proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Multiaccess, Mobility and Teletraffic for Wireless Communications held in October 1998 in Washington, D.C. The focus of this workshop is to identify, present and discuss the theoretical and implementation issues critical to the design of wireless networks. To ensure proper network design and engineering, designers of wireless networks need to understand and address issues such as radio propagation, antenna, interference management, multiaccess, mobility, teletraffic, signalling and networking protocols. In fact, not only do these issues need to be understood and addressed, their interdependence and interactions also deserve to be examined closely. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to present papers addressing these issues, with the hope of stimulating further collaboration among researchers of various disciplines in wireless communications. High-speed wireless networks such as wireless ATM and GSM with high-speed data services continue to attract much research and development efforts. The major challenges on the physical and link layers in these networks include radio design, interference management, resource allocation and multiaccess protocol. Several papers on these issues are presented here. As the availability of radio spectrum is limited, there is always a desire to ''maximize'' the spectral efficiency, for example, by diligent (and perhaps dynamic) re-use of frequency and cell layout, while guaranteeing a certain quality of service (QoS). A number of papers at this workshop address these topics.

Over the last few years, the local value of mobility and information in our society has grown tremendously. As the importance of Information and Communication Te- nologies (ICT) increases, we expect more changes in future mobility behavior. This includes not only mobility behavior for the single user, but also for the transportation of goods and infrastructure operators. It will also affect the regulation of resources and political decision-making. Both, data and mobility become more connected. To cope effectively with the anticipated changes, we must expand our focus and take current developments in both areas into account. The topic of the Lakeside Conference 2010, Data and Mobility – Transforming Information into Intelligent Traffic and Transportation Services, was chosen to underline the importance of information and mobility in transport and to offer an opportunity to discuss and question current activities in this sector. We will consider intermodal concepts and deployments in particular, where data transfer plays a major role, as this could help to reduce the current lack of infrastructure capacity (especially on roads and at airports and seaports). Using modern technologies, traffic mana- ment could become more sustainable and efficient. The Lakeside Conference is, again, organized by a consortium composed of the Lakeside Technology Park, the Austrian Transport Telematic Cluster, AustriaTech and the American Embassy in Austria.
