Comparing Media Systems Beyond The Western World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World offers a broad exploration of the conceptual foundations for comparative analysis of media and politics globally. It takes as its point of departure the widely used framework of Hallin and Mancini's Comparing Media Systems, exploring how the concepts and methods of their analysis do and do not prove useful when applied beyond the original focus of their 'most similar systems' design and the West European and North American cases it encompassed. It is intended both to use a wider range of cases to interrogate and clarify the conceptual framework of Comparing Media Systems and to propose new models, concepts and approaches that will be useful for dealing with non-Western media systems and with processes of political transition. Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World covers, among other cases, Brazil, China, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Thailand.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Introduced by Daniel C. Hallin and Paolo Mancini, the book takes stock of twenty years of exiting transformation of east European media systems after the collapse of communism in 1989-an explicit, comparative, academic discussion of media politics. Leading researchers from different regions of Europe and the United States address five major interrelated themes: 1) how ideological and normative constructs gave way to empirical systematic comparative work in media research; 2) the role of foreign media groups in post-communist regions and the effects of ownership in terms of impacts on media freedom; 3) the various dimensions of the relationship between mass media and political systems in a comparative perspective; 4) professionalization of journalism in different political cultures-autonomy of journalists, professional norms and practices, political instrumentalization and the commercialization of the media; 5) the role of state intervention in media systems.

It is based on the work of Hallin and Mancini “Comparing Media Systems: Three Models of Media and politics” published in 2004 (Hallin/Mancini 2004). Thus the research question this paper seeks to answer is “Is there a significant difference between the type of media system proposed by Hallin and Mancini and the degree of voting participation?” All three models differ in their size of media markets, their degree of political parallelism as well as the different kinds of professionalization of the journalists and the role of the state in the media systems. Subsequently there is a possibility of this affects the number of people attending elections. It is expected to find significant differences between the models in their degree of voting participation. In the following chapters this paper introduces the categorization of Hallin and Mancini and discusses its findings and also presents the reception of their work. Next the theory and the hypothesis are introduced. Then the methodology is displayed. Bivariate regression analysis will be used in order to analyse the differences regarding the media systems and the voter turnout. After that the findings of the analysis is shown and finally the conclusion drawn from the findings are discussed.

Comparing Two Media Systems In Relation To Politics The Media System In The U S And In Germany

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Media and Politics, Politic Communications, grade: 2,1, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institut für England- & Amerikastudien), course: Media Politics in the United States, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the media system of the U.S. and the media system of Germany. In the following, the two media systems are compared in terms of ownership, number, role and regulation. Furthermore, in this paper the link between media and politics will be examined. The last part consists of deducing, which media system serves its citizens best. In the scope of this work it will not be possible to take a look at all forms of media, so this paper will focus on TV. By looking at different countries it becomes clear that every state has its own media system with specific functions, structures and developments. Of course it can be argued, due to the interdependence of the world economy and the European integration that more and more a process of homogenization manifests. But in a media system cultural and political peculiarities still remain. This work serves to point out the similarities and the differences of two different media systems and aims to allude to the interrelations in regard to politics.

Comparing Post Socialist Media Systems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book explains divergent media system trajectories in the countries in southeast Europe, and challenges the presumption that the common socialist experience critically influences a common outcome in media development after democratic transformations, by showing different remote and proximate configuration of conditions that influence their contemporary shape. Applying an innovative longitudinal set-theoretical methodological approach, the book contributes to the theory of media systems with a novel theoretical framework for the comparative analysis of post-socialist media systems. This theory builds on the theory of historical institutionalism and the notion of critical junctures and path dependency in searching for an explanation for similarities or differences among media systems in the Eastern European region. Extending the understanding of media systems beyond a political journalism focus, this book is a valuable contribution to the literature on comparative media systems in the areas of media systems studies, political science, Southeast and Central European studies, post-socialist studies and communication studies.

How Media Inform Democracy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this timely book, leading researchers consider how media inform democracy in six countries – the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. Taking as their starting point the idea that citizens need to be briefed adequately with a full and intelligent coverage of public affairs so that they can make responsible, informed choices rather than act out of ignorance and misinformation, contributors use a comparative approach to examine the way in which the shifting media landscape is affecting and informing the democratic process across the globe. In particular, they ask: Can a comparative approach provide us with new answers to the question of how media inform democracy? Has increased commercialization made media systems more similar and affected equally the character of news and public knowledge throughout the USA and Europe? Is soft news and misinformation predominantly related to an American exceptionalism, based on the market domination of its media and marginalized public broadcaster? This study combines a content analysis of press and television news with representative surveys in six nations. It makes an indispensable contribution to debates about media and democracy, and about changes in media systems. It is especially useful for media theory, comparative media, and political communication courses.

The Media Systems In Europe

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This open access book traces the evolution of the European media landscape in the last 30 years, from 1990 to 2020. It is based on the theoretical classical hypotheses of regional media systems provided by Hallin and Mancini and at the same time puts them to test. The book further defines the proportions between geocultural patterns – national, regional, European, and global – to outline evolutionary trends in media landscapes. It analyzes to which degree European media have become more European, in the historical course of administrative unification and breaks the results down into concrete indexes and indicators. The book discusses the media systems of the member states of the European Union through a regional perspective, identifying similarities, differences, as well as their convergence in the digital age. It sheds light on the evolution of media systems in Europe, introduces existing relevant theoretical perspectives, and offers an overview of the new developments in European media. The book will appeal to students, researchers, and scholars of political science, communication, media, cultural, and policy studies, as well as practitioners and professionals interested in a better understanding of the European media landscape's evolution.
