BOOK EXCERPT:
Compressive sensing is a new signal processing paradigm that aims to encode sparse signals by using far lower sampling rates than those in the traditional Nyquist approach. It helps acquire, store, fuse and process large data sets efficiently and accurately. This method, which links data acquisition, compression, dimensionality reduction and optimization, has attracted significant attention from researchers and engineers in various areas. This comprehensive reference develops a unified view on how to incorporate efficiently the idea of compressive sensing over assorted wireless network scenarios, interweaving concepts from signal processing, optimization, information theory, communications and networking to address the issues in question from an engineering perspective. It enables students, researchers and communications engineers to develop a working knowledge of compressive sensing, including background on the basics of compressive sensing theory, an understanding of its benefits and limitations, and the skills needed to take advantage of compressive sensing in wireless networks.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The fast user growth in wireless communications has created significant demands for new wireless services in both the licensed and unlicensed frequency spectra. Since many spectra are not fully utilized most of the time, cognitive radio, as a form of spectrum reuse, can be an effective means to significantly boost communications resources. Since its introduction in late last century, cognitive radio has attracted wide attention from academics to industry. Despite the efforts from the research community, there are still many issues of applying it in practice. This books is an attempt to cover some of the open issues across the area and introduce some insight to many of the problems. It contains thirteen chapters written by experts across the globe covering topics including spectrum sensing fundamental, cooperative sensing, spectrum management, and interaction among users.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Perception of human beings has evolved from natural biosensor to powerful sensors and sensor networks. In sensor networks, trillions of devices are interconnected and sense a broad spectrum of contexts for human beings, laying the foundation of Internet of Things (IoT). However, sensor technologies have several limitations relating to deployment cost and usability, which render them unacceptable for practical use. Consequently, the pursuit of convenience in human perception necessitates a wireless, sensorless and contactless sensing paradigm. Recent decades have witnessed rapid developments in wireless sensing technologies, in which sensors detect wireless signals (such as acoustic, light, and radio frequency) originally designed for data transmission or lighting. By analyzing the signal measurements on the receiver end, channel characteristics can be obtained to convey the sensing results. Currently, significant effort is being devoted to employing the ambient Wi-Fi, RFID, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and television signals for smart wireless sensing, eliminating the need for dedicated sensors and promoting the prospect of the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT). This book provides a comprehensive and in-depth discussion of wireless sensing technologies. Specifically, with a particular focus on Wi-Fi-based sensing for understanding human behavior, it adopts a top-down approach to introduce three key topics: human detection, localization, and activity recognition. Presenting the latest advances in smart wireless sensing based on an extensive review of state-of-the-art research, it promotes the further development of this area and also contributes to interdisciplinary research.

BOOK EXCERPT:
JOINT COMMUNICATIONS AND SENSING Authoritative resource systematically introducing JCAS technologies and providing valuable information and knowledge to researchers and engineers Based on over six years of dedicated research on joint communications and sensing (JCAS) by the authors, their collaborators, and students, Joint Communications and Sensing is the first book to comprehensively cover the subject of JCAS, which is expected to deliver huge cost and energy savings, and therefore has become a hallmark of future 6G and next generation radar technologies. The book has three parts. Part I presents the basic JCAS concepts and applications and the basic signal processing algorithms to support JCAS. Part II covers communications-centric JCAS designs that describe how sensing can be integrated into communications networks such as 5G and 6G. Part III presents ways to integrate communications in various radar sensing technologies and platforms. Specific sample topics covered in Joint Communications and Sensing include: Three categories of JCAS systems, potential sensing applications of JCAS, signal processing fundamentals, and channel models for communications and radar Frameworks for perceptive mobile networks (PMNs), system modifications to enable PMN sensing, and PMN system issues Orthogonal time-frequency space waveform-based JCAS for IoT, including signal models, echo pre-processing, and target parameter estimation Joint Communications and Sensing provides valuable information and knowledge to researchers and engineers in the communications and radar sensing communities and industries, enabling them to upskill and prepare for JCAS technology research and development. The text is of particular interest to engineers in the wireless communications industry who are pursuing new capabilities in 6G.
