BOOK EXCERPT:

This Proceedings contains the papers presented at the 8th IFAC Symposium on Computer Aided Control Systems Design held at Salford, UK on 11-13 September 2000. Modelling has emerged as a central issue here and industrial users require the development of modelling languages for both analyses and design as well as generic models and tools which can be used for system identification, optimisation and fault diagnostics. Linear lumped parameter systems of general complexity are currently well addressed by a range of commercially available packages. However, there is a dearth of tools suitable for the analysis and synthesis of large scale, distributed, non-linear, hybrid and stochastic systems which are increasingly a feature in modern manufacturing and process engineering. As the scale of the problems to be addressed increases, there is a need for numerically robust and efficient computational procedures linked to powerful interactive graphical interfaces which maximise the user of limited human resources, and, of course, standardised data bases which can be used with wide range of analysis and design procedures. Topics covered included the now traditional domains of algorithm architectures and tools and there was a very welcome emphasis on applications where no less than four sessions were devoted to this important aspect.

Computer Aided Control System Design

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is about Computer Aided Control System Design (CACSD) of the direct process controller. Various methods and tools, representing an up-to-date level of development, are presented by leading experts. Several articles describe main principles and problems associated with modern direct control and with CACSD. Existing tools are presented, including packages for stability analysis of nonlinear systems, adaptive control design and integrated analysis, and simulation and tuning of controllers. The reader can observe that it is possible to develop CACSD tools by using open general packages such as Matlab or Simulab, or by providing specialised software. He can then compare both approaches and get an improved understanding of their respective advantages and disadvantages. The leading article by the editors presents CACSD Methods and tools in a broader context. There is also detailed material on upper control layers, hierarchical control, and real-time systems.

Computer Aided Systems Theory Eurocast 99

BOOK EXCERPT:

Computer Aided Systems Theory (CAST) deals with the task of contributing to the creation and implementation of tools for the support of usual CAD tools for design and simulation by formal mathematical or logical means in modeling. Naturally, thebasisfortheconstructionandimplementationofCASTsoftwareis provided by the existing current knowledge in modeling and by the experience of practitioners in engineering design. Systems Theory, as seen from the viewpoint of CAST research and CAST tool development, has the role of providing formal frameworks and related theoretical knowledge for model-construction and model analysis. We purposely do not distinguish sharply between systems theory and CAST and other similar ?elds of research and tool development such as for example in applied numerical analysis or other computational sciences. TheheredocumentedEUROCASTconferencewhichtookplaceattheVienna University of Technology re?ects current mainstreams in CAST. As in the p- vious conferences new topics, both theoretical and application oriented, have been addressed. The presented papers show that the ?eld is widespread and that new - velopments in computer science and in information technology are the driving forces. Theeditorswouldliketothanktheauthorsforprovidingtheirmanuscriptsin hardcopyandinelectronicformontime.Thesta?ofSpringer-VerlagHeidelberg gave, as in previous CAST publications, valuable support in editing this volume.

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents theory and latest application work in Bond Graph methodology with a focus on: • Hybrid dynamical system models, • Model-based fault diagnosis, model-based fault tolerant control, fault prognosis • and also addresses • Open thermodynamic systems with compressible fluid flow, • Distributed parameter models of mechanical subsystems. In addition, the book covers various applications of current interest ranging from motorised wheelchairs, in-vivo surgery robots, walking machines to wind-turbines.The up-to-date presentation has been made possible by experts who are active members of the worldwide bond graph modelling community. This book is the completely revised 2nd edition of the 2011 Springer compilation text titled Bond Graph Modelling of Engineering Systems – Theory, Applications and Software Support. It extends the presentation of theory and applications of graph methodology by new developments and latest research results. Like the first edition, this book addresses readers in academia as well as practitioners in industry and invites experts in related fields to consider the potential and the state-of-the-art of bond graph modelling.
