BOOK EXCERPT:

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Conceptual Structures, ICCS 2008, held in Toulouse, France, in July 2008. The 19 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from over 70 submissions. The scope of the contributions ranges from theoretical and methodological topics to implementation issues and applications. The papers present a family of Conceptual Structure approaches that build on techniques derived from artificial intelligence, knowledge representation, applied mathematics and lattice theory, computational linguistics, conceptual modeling, intelligent systems and knowledge management.

Representation And Management Of Narrative Information

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A big amount of important, ‘economically relevant’ information, is buried within the huge mass of multimedia documents that correspond to some form of ‘narrative’ description. Due to the ubiquity of these ‘narrative’ resources, being able to represent in a general, accurate, and effective way their semantic content – i.e., their key ‘meaning’ – is then both conceptually relevant and economically important. In this book, we present the main properties of NKRL (‘Narrative Knowledge Representation Language’), a language expressly designed for representing, in a standardised way, the ‘meaning’ of complex multimedia narrative documents. NKRL is a fully implemented language/environment. The software exists in two versions, an ORACLE-supported version and a file-oriented one. Written from a multidisciplinary perspective, this exhaustive description of NKRL and of the associated knowledge representation principles will be an invaluable source of reference for practitioners, researchers, and graduates.

Information Modelling And Knowledge Bases Xxv

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Because of our ever increasing use of and reliance on technology and information systems, information modelling and knowledge bases continue to be important topics in those academic communities concerned with data handling and computer science. As the information itself becomes more complex, so do the levels of abstraction and the databases themselves. This book is part of the series Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases, which concentrates on a variety of themes in the important domains of conceptual modeling, design and specification of information systems, multimedia information modeling, multimedia systems, ontology, software engineering, knowledge and process management, knowledge bases, cross-cultural communication and context modeling. Theoretical disciplines, including cognitive science, artificial intelligence, logic, linguistics and analytical philosophy, also receive attention. The selected papers presented here cover many areas of information modeling and knowledge bases including: theory of concepts, semantic computing, data mining, context-based information retrieval, ontological technology, image databases, temporal and spatial databases, document data management, software engineering, cross-cultural computing, environmental analysis, social networks, WWW information management, and many others. This new issue also contains papers initiated by the panels on: “Cross-cultural Communication with Icons and Images” and “Conceptual Modelling of Collaboration for Information Systems”. The book will be of interest to all those interested in advances in research and applications in the academic disciplines concerned.

Conceptual Structures For Knowledge Creation And Communication

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume contains the proceedings of ICCS 2003, the 11th International C- ferenceonConceptualStructures. Thisconferenceseriescontinuestobethemain forum for the presentation and discussion of state-of-the-art research on conc- tualstructures. Thetheories, methodologies, andtechniquespresentedherehave grown considerably in scope in recent years. On the other hand, solid bridges spanning the boundaries between such diverse ?elds as Conceptual Graphs, F- mal Concept Analysis, and others are increasingly being built in our community. The theme of this year’s conference was “Conceptual Structures for Kno- edge Creation and Communication”. In our increasingly (Inter)networked world, the potential support of information technology for the creation and commu- cation of quality knowledge is almost boundless. However, in reality, many c- ceptual barriers prevent the use of this potential. The main problem is no longer in the technological infrastructure, but in how to navigate, use, and manage the wealth of available data resources. Thus, the question is: how to create and communicate from data the information and ultimately the knowledge required by an ever more complex and dynamic society? Conceptual structures research focuses on what is behind and between the data glut and the information ov- load that need to be overcome in answering this question. In this way, our ?eld contributes important ideas on how to actually realize some of the many still ambitious visions. All regular papers were reviewed in a thorough and open process by at least two reviewers and one editor.
