The decline of the East-West conflict has opened up the arena for increased attention to other lines of conflict, in Europe and at the global level. Environmental disruption, not a new phenomenon by any means, is a chief beneficiary of the shift in priorities in the public debate. The Scientific and Environmental Affairs Divi sion of NATO has moved with the times and has defined environmental security as one of its priority areas for cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union. This book is the main output of an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW), held in Bolkesjl/l, Norway, 12-16 June 1996. I would like to acknowledge the personal support of L. Veiga da Cunha, Director of the Priority Area on Environmental Security. Research on these issues is now very much a collaborative effort across former lines of division in Europe. The title of the conference “Contradiction, Conflict and Continuity: Their Significance in Contemporary Society” is generic. Contradiction and conflict became tangible from the time when language became the medium of expression. The inevitable consequence of such contradictions and conflicts was severe bloodsheds. As society developed, perceptions towards contradiction and conflict were also changed. Some ideologies which were identified as the prevalent customs of the society became the mammoth issues of contradiction and conflicts. Sometimes, the contradictions were restricted within discussion among the cultured people, sometimes it was continued as people, holding different ideologies, moved on simultaneously without influencing the other, for example, between the theist and the atheist and among various isms. The same idealism which triggered the ire of conflict and contradiction in different socio-political aspects, sometimes become the soul guiding force for the development in various trajectories.

This book examines human conflict throughout history, the reasons behind the struggles, and why it persists. The volume delves into the causes of human conflict and what can be done about them. Based on detailed descriptions that support insightful interpretations, the book explores significant historical events in the course of human history. By pursuing a “web of violence” approach, it raises and answers questions about the sources of conflict and how it may or may not be resolved through investigations into human agency and practice. It evaluates lessons learned concerning human conflict, violence, and warfare. To illustrate these lessons, the book presents a broad geographical and temporal set of data, including research on the time of Neanderthals in Europe (20-30 thousand years ago); the Late Neolithic civilization on the Mediterranean (6-8 thousand years ago); medieval Ireland; contemporary history of the Western Dani peoples of West Papua; and, finally, recent issues in Brazil, Congo, and Kenya.
