Recent Trends In Constructed Wetlands For Industrial Wastewater Treatment

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book examines various unique applications and their effectiveness of constructed wetlands for the treatment of complex and heavily polluted wastewater from industrial sources. It also highlights the technological and advanced knowledge in application of constructed wetlands through different microbiological and advanced biochemical technologies. Special attention is paid to suspended solids, organic matter, and nutrient removal. Deep insights are provided for facilities such as those in oil and gas industries, agro-industry, paper and pharmaceutical manufacturing, the textile industry, wineries, breweries, and sludge treatment, among others. Constructed wetlands are low-cost and sustainable systems for wastewater treatment. Traditionally, they have been used for urban and domestic wastewater treatment, but in the last two decades, applications for industrial wastewater treatment have increased due to the advances of the technology and extended research in the field. The advances have also been encouraged by the economic, environmental, and societal advantages over conventional technologies. This book helps academicians and industrialists obtain detailed knowledge about constructed wetlands in the field of wastewater treatment.

Wetlands For Tropical Applications Wastewater Treatment By Constructed Wetlands

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book provides a systematic exposition of the design features of constructed wetlands, and their management (in terms of siting, physical maintenance, and operation). Only very few books (or chapters) have been published on constructed wetlands in tropical conditions and none are current. The selection of plant species, managing their growth and harvesting cycles, and the impact these have on the attenuation of organic and inorganic pollutants, nutrients, and pathogens would be of interest to students and practitioners of the art working under tropical conditions. The potential of constructed wetlands as a low-cost intervention for developing countries in tropical regions that faced water pollution problems, in particular, deserves to be explored systematically.

Wastewater Treatment In Constructed Wetlands With Horizontal Sub Surface Flow

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Wetlands have been used for uncontrolled wastewater disposal for centuries. However, the change in attitude towards wetlands during the 1950s and 1960s caused the minimization of the use of natural wetlands for wastewater treatment (at least in developed countries). Constructed wetlands have been used for wastewater treatment for about forty years. Constructed wetland treatment systems are engineered systems that have been designed and constructed to utilize the natural processes for removal of pollutants. They are designed to take advantage of many of the same processes that occur in natural wetlands, but do so within a more controlled environment. The aim of this book is to summarize the knowledge on horizontal s- surface flow constructed wetlands (HF CWs) and objectively evaluate their treatment efficiency under various conditions. The information on this type of wastewater treatment technology is scattered in many publications but a comprehensive summary based on world-wide experience has been lacking. The book provides an extensive overview of this treatment technology around the world, including examples from more than 50 countries and examples of various types of wastewater treated in HF CWs.

Combined Industrial Wastewater Treatment In Constructed Wetland Systems Containing Emergent Plants And Algae

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, course: Envirmantal Science, language: English, abstract: The objective of this study is to access the effectiveness of integrated biological treatment systems including Internal Circulation bioreactor (IC) and constructed wetlands (CWs) containing either macrophytes or algal biomass for treating industrial wastewater. Anaerobic reactor alone was able to reduce COD (52%), turbidity (89%), EC (24%). Bioreactor was not efficient in meeting NEQs of Pakistan. So, post treatment of Anaerobic bioreactor effluents was carried out in CWs containing macrophytes (Arundo donax and Eichhornia crassipes) reduce COD (89%), turbidity (99%). Wetlands containing algal biomass were not effective in treating majority of water quality parameters. Inhibition of algal biomass was observed due to physicochemical characteristics of wastewater. The integrated treatment system consisting of IC bioreactor and macrophytes is a more suitable option to treat industrial wastewater.

Constructed Wetlands Treatment Of Municipal Wastewaters

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This manual discusses the capabilities of constructed wetlands, a functional design approach, and the management requirements to achieve the designed purpose. The manual also attempts to put the proper perspective on the appropriate use, design and performance of constructed wetlands. For some applications, they are an excellent option because they are low in cost and in maintenance requirements, offer good performance, and provide a natural appearance, if not more beneficial ecological benefits. In other applications, such as large urban areas with large wastewater flows, they may not be at all appropriate owing to their land requirements. Constructed wetlands are especially well suited for wastewater treatment in small communities where inexpensive land is available and skilled operators hard to find and keep. Primary customers will be engineers who service small communities, state regulators, and planning professionals. Secondary users will be environmental groups and the academics.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Dynamics And Management In Constructed And Natural Wetlands

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

At present, constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment are a widely used technology for treatment of various types of wastewaters. The International Water Association (then International Association on Water Pollution Research and Control) recognized wetlands as useful tools for wastewater treatment and est- lished the series of biennial conferences on the use of wetland systems for water pollution control in 1988. In about 1993, we decided to organize a workshop on nutrient cycling in natural and constructed wetlands with the major idea to bring together researchers working on constructed and also natural wetlands. It was not our intention to compete with IWA conferences, but the workshop should rather complement the series on treatment wetlands by IWA. We believed that the exchange of information obtained from natural and constructed wetlands would be beneficial for all participants. And the time showed that we were correct. The first workshop took place in 1995 at T?ebo? in South Bohemia and most of the papers dealt with constructed wetlands. Over the years we extended the topics on natural wetlands (such as role of wetlands in the landscape or wetland restoration and creation) and during the 6th workshop held at T?ebo? from May 30 to June 3, 2006, nearly half of 38 papers presented during the workshop dealt with natural wetlands. This workshop was attended by 39 participants from 19 countries from Europe, Asia, North and South Americas and Australia. The volume contains 29 peer-reviewed papers out of 38 papers which were presented during the workshop.

A Financial And Environmental Analysis Of Constructed Wetlands For Industrial Wastewater Treatment

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Dow Chemical Co. (Dow) is actively working to develop an approach to value ecosystem services and incorporate them in business decisions. This study investigates the use of replacement cost methodology (RCM) for financial analysis and life cycle assessment (LCA) for environmental assessment. The case study analyzes a business decision made in 1995, where a constructed wetland was built instead of a sequencing batch reactor to solve a regulatory compliance issue in meeting suspended solids requirements for a wastewater treatment system at the Union Carbide Corp. (a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Co.) plant in Seadrift, Texas. The financial results indicate that the total net present value savings calculated for implementing the constructed wetland instead of the sequencing batch reactor is $282 million over the project's lifetime. The LCA demonstrates that the lower energy and material inputs to the constructed wetland resulted in lower potential impacts for fossil fuel use, acidification, smog formation, and ozone depletion and likely lead to lower potential impacts for global warming and marine eutrophication. The result from the inventory of land use shows that both the upstream land burdens (for the sequencing batch reactor) and the on-site acreage of the constructed wetland are similar in magnitude and importance, contrary to the assumption that green infrastructure always requires greater land area. This case study illustrates how Dow can consider financial and environmental analyses in comparing gray and green infrastructure solutions and further understand the benefits of implementing green infrastructure in an appropriate industrial application.
