BOOK EXCERPT:
Both human rights and globalization are powerful ideas and processes, capable of transforming the world in profound ways. Notwithstanding their universal claims, however, the processes are constructed, and they draw their power from the specific cultural and political contexts in which they are constructed. Far from bringing about a harmonious cosmopolitan order, they have stimulated conflict and opposition. In the context of globalization, as the idea of human rights has become universal, its meaning has become one more terrain of struggle among groups with their own interests and goals. Part I of this volume looks at political and cultural struggles to control the human rights regime -- that is, the power to construct the universal claims that will prevail in a territory -- with respect to property, the state, the environment, and women. Part II examines the dynamics and counterdynamics of transnational networks in their interactions with local actors in Iran, China, and Hong Kong. Part III looks at the prospects for fruitful human rights dialogiue between competing universalisms that by definition are intolerant of conradiction and averse to compromise.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In this volume, several leading foreign policy and international relations experts consider the long term prospects and implications of US foreign policy as it has been shaped and practiced during the presidency of George W. Bush. The essays in this collection - based on the research of well-respected scholars such as Ole Holsti, Loch Johnson, John Ruggie, Jack Donnelly, Robert Leiber, Karen Mingst, and Edward Luck - offer a clear assessment: while US resources are substantial, Washington's ability to shape outcomes in the world is challenged by its expansive foreign policy goals, its exceptionalist approach to international relations, serious questions about the limits of its hard power resources as well as fundamental changes in the global system. Illustrating one of the central ironies of the contemporary situation in foreign affairs and international relations: that at the very time of the 'unipolar moment,' the world has become globalized to such an extent that the unilateralism of the Bush Administration leads as much to resistance as it does to coercion, compliance, and cooperation. American Foreign Policy in a Globalized World will be of interest to students and scholars of politics and international relations.

BOOK EXCERPT:
* Features a perspective of both developing and industrialized countries * For a wide audience including academics, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and practitioners The growing impact of cross-border civil society networks and campaigns on global policy has made transnational civil society an increasingly important phenomenon. Transnational Civil Society: An Introduction provides a clear and accessible introduction to the history, characteristics, and achievements of influential transnational civil society networks, coalitions, and movements. Editors Srilatha Batliwala and L. David Brown provide an in-depth analysis of the forces that have shaped transnational activism: globalism, economic and political power structures, and cross-border organization by non-state actors. Important transnational movements that have shaped our world - labor, environment, human rights, women's rights, peace, and economic justice - are also described and analyzed. The contributors are globally experienced activist-scholars and reflective practitioners discussing both developing and industrialized countries. For students, practitioners, and activists alike, Transnational Civil Society: An Introduction offers comprehensible descriptions of transnational initiatives working toward effective and sustainable solutions to some of the critical challenges facing our world.
