Contemporary Greece And Europe

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This title was first published in 2000: Contemporary Greek society is characterized by an all-embracing trend for reform. This task, however, is constrained by problems of Greek polity rooted in the historical and political culture. This text explores the important facets of divergence between Greece and the EU, examining the process through which they affect the relative performance of the country in the economic, social, political and international relations fronts, together with significant attempts to modernize and rationalize internal and external policies and structures. The book is in five parts. In the first, introductory, section, Greece's Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, the late Yannos Kranidiotis, analyzes the fundamental objectives of Greek foreign policy, whilst the editors explore the challenges of EU membership for Greek domestic and foreign politics, and Greece's participation in the process of European integration. The second part deals with Greece and the EMU, the third analyzes the issues related to state modernization and adjustment. A fourth section examines the welfare state and related policies, and the final part analyzes Greece's foreign policy and external relations, with particular emphasis on the Balkans and Greek-Turkish relations.

Semiperipheral Development And Foreign Policy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This title was first published in 2003.Tayfur's theoretical approach to foreign policy analysis is original and represents an extremely valuable addition to a field which is under-theorised. It develops the World-System theory of Wallerstein and Arrighi. In applying this theory to two case studies, Tayfur offers a detailed account of the domestic and foreign policies of Greece and Spain after the Second World War. He illuminates in particular their turn from a foreign policy orientation towards the United States to a growing identification with, and eventual integration into, the European Community. This original book is pertinent to a range of contemporary debates and suitable to feature on the reading lists of every course on foreign policy analysis and international political theory. In addition, students of comparative politics, political transition and Mediterranean studies, will find this book particularly useful.

Politics And Policy In Greece

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This rare focus on the politics of contemporary Greece explores in particular the country’s processes of public policy-making. It is more than thirty years since the restoration of democracy in Greece and in this period the country has undergone a number of major changes. Domestic political tensions have arisen from the pressures of ‘Europeanization’ as a consequence of Greece’s membership in the European Union. EU membership has helped define a ‘modernization’ project, latterly associated with Premier Costas Simitis, which clashes with traditional practices and paradigms. In addition, other challenges have arisen: of a multi-ethnic society, of the loss of faith in old ideologies and of the passage of old divisions. Greece now faces pressure to adapt to the external environment, as well as to the constraints of the will and capability of the domestic system. Politics and Policy in Greece addresses core issues, such as: * How far has the politics of ‘modernization’ penetrated Greek society? * How far have reforms to state-economy relations, welfare systems and constitutional rights reflected a liberal agenda and how far have they reflected traditional concerns? * How has ‘modernization’ affected Greece’s relations with the European Union? Containing expert overviews and detailed case studies of the dynamics of domestic politics, this accessible and informative volume is essential reading for both Greeks and non-Greeks alike.

Turkey Greece And The Borders Of Europe

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Republic of Turkey has long aspired to join Europe both politically and culturally. However, its attempts to do so have been met with scepticism, and there is no unequivocal answer to the question of whether or not Turkey is accepted and viewed as European. This question is of particular interest in the case of Germany, the engine of the European Union’s economy which is not only home to millions of Turkish immigrants, but also has a history of cooperation with Turkey unique among European countries. With its analysis of West German prestige newspapers printed between 1950 and 1975, this study looks into how Germans viewed Turkey from a cultural and political perspective during a critical period of Turkish integration with the West and Europe, and compares this with perceptions of Greece, whose path to Europe was far less problematic by virtue of its classical legacy and Christian heritage.

Contemporary Greek Fiction In A United Europe

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

After more than twenty years as a full member of the European Union, Greece has produced a literature with radically different thematic, ideological and linguistic orientations from previous periods, for both domestic and international reasons. Since literature is considered to constitute both the repository of culture and one of its several manifestations, any attempt to assess cultural convergence in a unified Europe necessitates an examination and evaluation of contemporary literary production in individual member states. The present volume - the collective work of academics, literary critics and fiction writers - investigates the dramatically new trends that have emerged in contemporary Greek fiction and places this local literature within an international context.

Democracy In Times Of Crises

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Inspired by the democratic origins of the Greek naval victory at Salamis, the book discusses the current pressing issues of democracy worldwide. In 12 carefully selected chapters, well-renowned scholars from around the globe discuss topics such as Brexit, Euroscepticism, or the rise of populism. The authors further analyze various aspects of democracy, as well as various types of democratic regimes, such as mixed government, direct democracy, and cases of quasi democracies. While doing so, they relate this discussion to the pivotal question of how the quality of democracy today can be improved, seeking answers and solutions to current pending problems at the global level. This book is the second out of two edited volumes as a sequel of an international academic conference titled Salamis and Democracy: 2500 Years After that took place between October 3rd and October 5th, 2020, on the occasion of the 2500th anniversary of the great historical event of the Battle of Salamis, which saved Greek culture and the newly founded democratic regimes throughout the Hellenic world during the Classical period (508-323 BCE). The book is a must-read for scholars and students of political science, economics, and law, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of democracy, governance, populism, social choice, and constitutional law.
