Southeast Asia is sub-region of Asia that consists of 11 countries that spread out from the eastern China to India and are so rich in religion, culture, and history diversities. Ten of the 11 countries are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In terms of economy, most of them are within the World Bank classification of lower-middle income economies. Although classified as the lower-middle income economies, Southeast Asian countries have been praised as having buoyant economies, healthy investment, and growing trade ties. These economic potentials are in conjunction with the dynamic political sphere in the Southeast Asian countries. Recent increasing confrontation between China and the U.S. have also created the geopolitical uncertainty which threatens the economic growth in the region. All these economic and political events in the region are closely related to international law since they are dealt with legal entities beyond their own jurisdiction. This book would discuss various contemporary issues of international law that occurred in or related to countries located in the Southeast Asian region. There are 9 articles in this book. Since the conclusion of World War II, the legacy of militarism and colonialism in areas of Asia has left many unresolved conflicts, dividing parts of the region. This legacy has also contributed to the discourse of contemporary legal issues in the region, including territorial disputes, human rights, the environment, state responsibility, and international trade among others. This volume addresses salient international legal issues that flowed from the legacy of the region's historical experience with colonialism. The book specifically addresses topics including territorial boundary disputes, the law of the sea and maritime delimitation, international law and colonialism, responsibility to protect and international dispute resolution. This volume provides a first systematic, comprehensive account of English in Southeast Asia (SEA) based on current research by leading scholars in the field. The volume first provides a systematic account of the linguistic features across all sub-varieties found within each country. It also has a section dedicated to the historical context and language planning policies to provide a background to understanding the development of the linguistic features covered in Part I and, finally, the vibrancy of the sociolinguistic and pragmatic realities that govern actual language in use in a wide variety of domains such as the law, education, popular culture, electronic media and actual pragmatic encounters are also given due coverage. This volume also includes an extensive bibliography of works on English in SEA, thus providing a useful and valuable resource for language researchers, linguists, classroom educators, policy makers and anyone interested in the topic of English in SEA or World Englishes as a whole.

This is an open access book. In light of the rising Southeast Asia in the centre of knowledge production, the Department of International Relations, the University of Mataram seeks to explore more wide-ranging topics of migration and development. Therefore, we plan to organize Southeast Asian Conference on Migration and Development (SeaCMD), which will take place on Lombok Island of West Nusa Tenggara Province in Indonesia. We encourage a broad range of scholars including researchers, lecturers, policymakers, research consultants, and postgraduate scholars to share their ongoing research or promote their past papers at this conference. Scholars from various disciplines are also encouraged to apply.

Despite the efforts of Southeast Asian governments and of ASEAN, transboundary haze continues to be a major environmental problem in Southeast Asia. This book demonstrates that the issue is complex, and explains why efforts to solve the problem in purely political terms are ineffective, and likely to continue to be ineffective. The book shows how state-led, state-incentivised agribusiness development lies at the heart of the problem, leading to a large rise in palm oil production, with extensive clearing of forests, leading to deliberate or accidental fires and the resulting haze. Moreover, although the forest clearing is occurring in Indonesia, many of the companies involved are Malaysian and Singaporean; and, further, many of these companies have close relationships with the politicians and officials responsible for addressing the problem and who thereby have a conflict of interest. The author concludes by discussing the huge difficulties involved in overturning this system of 'patronage politics'.

The first 50 years of ASEAN integration has brought peace and prosperity to the Southeast Asian region, while the next 50 will undoubtedly be fraught with unprecedented challenges. Today ASEAN not only has to contend with its own internal challenges arising from the highly diverse political, economic and socio-cultural systems of its member countries, it also has to deal with external factors which include shifts in geostrategic balance, fraying global consensus on free trade, populism and xenophobia, climate change, digital revolutions and cybercrimes. Set against the above background, this edited collection considers some of the contemporary issues and challenges faced by ASEAN in its journey towards more cohesive and dynamic regional integration.
