BOOK EXCERPT:
What is unorthodox in this book? Much has happened in the last few years, especially in terms of the somewhat surpris ing rate at which the theories presented herein have been gaining increasing acceptance and support even by the most skeptical professionals. Nevertheless, the purpose of this up-dated Preface is not to tell the biographical and acceptance story behind this book, but to bring together some non-physical and non technical conclusions for those readers who find the physico-mathematical sections of this book too difficult to follow. A secondary purpose is to present here some newer conclu sions, especially in general philosophy and in aesthetics. Yet, the main physico philosophical conclusions presented in this book are not to be summarized here. For that purpose one must tum to the text itself. * * * The theories presented here have been developed in total isolation. They were never presented in "professional conferences", as most current writers do. Whether or not that was important remains to be seen. Hence, all I can state to critics and enthusiastic follow ers alike is the fact that I do not belong to any 'formal discipline', 'pressure group', or 'pro fessional organization'.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Encyclopedia of Cosmology, first published in 1993, recounts the history, philosophical assumptions, methodological ambiguities, and human struggles that have influenced the various responses to the basic questions of cosmology through the ages, as well as referencing important scientific theories. Just as the recognition of social conventions in other cultures can lead to a more productive perspective on our own behaviour, so too a study of the cosmologies of other times and places can enable us recognise elements of our own cosmology that might otherwise pass as inevitable developments. Apart from modern natural science, therefore, this volume incorporates brief treatments of Native American, Cave-Dweller, Chinese, Egyptian, Islamic, Megalithic, Mesopotamian, Greek, Medieval and Copernican cosmology, leading to an appreciation of cosmology as an intellectual creation, not merely a collection of facts. It is a valuable reference tool for any student or academic with an interest in the history of science and cosmology specifically.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Civilization is a uniquely human creation that has been fraught with war, strife, and iniquity. Unfortunately, past mistakes have been repeated over and over again, hindering progress and eventually sweeping civilization away in the course of evolution. Civilization is impossible without refinement. In his latest well-researched treatise Intrinsic to Universe, Tan Kheng Yeang proposes a new socio-political philosophy that, unlike the idealized societies of Plato, More, Rousseau, and Locke, recognizes humanitys innate foibles and offers an innovative presentation for the creation of a new world order. Yeang shares not only the principles of his suggested new civilization, but also a new religious philosophy and fresh ideas for a political, economic, and social system that will challenge old rules and archaic thinking. Also included are critiques of both Eastern and Western civilizations and a careful examination of the modern world. Harmony is essential and chaos is intolerable if life is to be genuinely happy. Intrinsic to Universe provides an in-depth glimpse into a new civilization and encourages curious thinkers to look beyond past mistakes and into a brighter future.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Merrill, who urged a unique vision of reality that shaped a Mormon eschatology. He shows how authorities eventually retreated from the perception of reality as "true" and adopted a scientifically less secure position in order to protect their theology, an eventuality which ultimately resulted in a reactionary response to science within Mormonism.

BOOK EXCERPT:
You’re no idiot, of course. You know Heisenburg’s uncertainty principle has nothing to do with where you put your car keys. But modern cosmology is relatively complicated. The mystery of the universe definitely isn’t one we can flip to the end to see whodunit. That hasn’t stopped physicists, astronomers, and philosophers from searching for clues! The topic is infinite (literally), but once you’ve read this book, you’ll have a solid idea of our place in the universe—and even where the cosmos itself might be headed. In this Complete Idiot’s Guide®, you’ll explore: • Major religions, philosophical, and scientific theories concerning the nature and origin of the universe. • “The theory of everything”—one coherent model that would explain how all the forces and particles of nature work. • The fascinating and even sometimes bizarre implications of the latest theories.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Cosmology is an unusual science with an unusual history. This book examines the formative years of modern cosmology from the perspective of its interaction with religious thought. As the first study of its kind, it reveals how closely associated the development of cosmology has been with considerations of a philosophical and religious nature. From nineteenth-century thermodynamics to the pioneering cosmological works of Georges Lemaître and Arthur E Milne, religion has shaped parts of modern cosmological theory. By taking the religious component seriously, a new and richer history of cosmology emerges.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The central topic of current philosophy of religion has been the meaning and the truth of the assertion that God exists. The roots of this preoccupation lie in the natural theology, and the criticism of that theology, of the eighteenth century in the West. The arguments of Hume and Kant are still the basis of contemporary discussion. While this attachment to eighteenth-century concerns may manifest a laudable sense of reverence for our ancestors, it has led the philosophy of religion into lamentable delinquencies and impoverishments.
