Understanding Creative Business

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From authors used to operating between the commercial, public and independent sectors of the mixed cultural economy, Understanding Creative Business bridges the gap between creative practice and mainstream business organisation, entrepreneurship and management. Using stories, case studies and exercises it discusses the positioning of creative practice within professional and business development, cultural policy-making and the wider cultural economy, and suggests what the broader field of business and management studies can learn from the informal structure and working practices of creative industries networks. Consideration is given to how ethical and moral value orientations animate creative practice and how they play into the wider debate about social responsibilities within business and public policy. The authors also explore the way creative business practices often coalesce around emergent and self-organized networks and how this signals alternative approaches to management, entrepreneurship, business organisation and collaboration. Above all else this book is about relationships; the practical examples expose the ways creative business can professionalise research, develop and sustain routes to growth through 'open' collaborative innovation and the lessons this holds for more general business innovation and policy engagements with the public domain. Written in accessible language, this book will be useful to researchers, students, educators and practitioners within the creative industries; to those working within cultural policy, arts and cultural management; and to all with an interest in management and leadership.

Understanding The Creative Process

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

As a Project Manager you must have a clear understanding of how to manage and encourage the creative process. Project managers alike are geared toward people management and not creative cycles. Most times they find themselves unable to mitigate conflict and the creative process fails. In my book, I introduced basic management concepts designed to manage the creative environment while setting the stage for innovation. By managing the creative environment, a Project Manager will lay the groundwork for the innovation without forsaking other basic management cycles. Since the main goal of a Project Manager should be to manage scope and the strategical heading of a project; he or she must prove themselves to be a capable leader, able to understand the needs of the team essentially when it comes to how to care for and mitigate innovation in a project environment prior to initiating a creative brainstorming session.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The motivation of this book is simple, yet fundamental: No complete understanding of the modern economy is possible without a thorough grounding in the field of innovation as an economic activity. The book, as its title emphasizes, aims at helping readers to gain a comprehension of two inextricably linked issues: challenging innovation and the future of human work. To this end, the book integrates a triad of topics: innovation as an economic activity, modus operandi of an innovation-driven economy, and the persistent progression toward automation of human jobs. The main message conveyed by this book is that a creative economy will converge to an economy governed by smart machines aka robots, but will produce benefits if addressed in a rational manner. As to the salient features of this book, Accessibility: Accessible to readers with only cursory knowledge (if any) in economics Style: Adherence to a discursive, non-mathematical style Brevity: Covers material in a succinct, easily understandable manner, drawing upon real world examples Appendices: Each chapter is supplemented with appendices that elaborate upon pertinent real world examples and applications Self-contained: All the key concepts are defined and exemplified within the book Applicability: Uses examples that resonate with a wide audience of readers concerned about the advance of robots Non-mathematical diagrams: Provides accessible and readily understandable figures/graphs Protective stance: Contains a rational response to the march of the robots which is useful for workers of all ages

Understanding Creativity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

“Any ideas?” How often have you heard or said something like that? Most of the problems that we face force us to think about new ways of solving problems. Be it complicated design solutions, or simple riddles that we encounter in our free time, the world requires us to use our creativity. It is what has taken us so far. But creativity is very often not well understood. People often talk about it with an aura of mysticism; as if it were some sort of magical property; as if ideas “came from” somewhere; as if you would not be able to understand it, but that by applying some almost superstitious practices, you would gain access to it. Some say that magic is the explanation we use when we do not understand something. Instead of that, we want to make you understand creativity. By knowing a bit more about how your brain works, you will be able to enhance your creativity, and that of those around you. Not because you will be applying some trick, but because you will be understanding what is happening. We take pride in basing this book on scientific evidence. The authors have carried out research in this area, but have also read extensively the works of other authors. We will be sharing with you the most modern theories - and the older ones that have stood the test of time. In some books, you will find authors that shared what has worked for them, without understanding why. We will make sure you know what is behind the curtain all the time. In other words: we will not be talking about magic remedies, we will not give you any unexplained tricks, and we will not ask you to just take our word for it. We want to make sure you understand creativity.

Understanding Creative Users Of Icts

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The disjuncture between the design intent of the developers of ICTs and the needs of the users has often led to surprising use of new technologies, as users have refused to become mere agents of the designers. Individual users have adopted their own uses of ICTs based on the complex webs of relations and meanings in which they function as social actors. Instead of adjusting these webs to new ICTs, they have fit the ICTs into their pre-existing social webs, often resulting in imaginative and creative uses of new technologies, not envisaged by the original designers. The contributions in this volume provide studies of such integrations of ICTs into the lives of human users, and demonstrate that such uses should not be regarded as 'faulty' or 'mistaken', merely because they 'fail' to meet the expectations of the original designers of the ICTs. Instead, human users should be given precedence over ICTs, and the creative uses of 'universal' technologies by individual users should be emphasised and studied, so as to move towards a better understanding and appreciation of the integration of ICTs into human lives. This book was originally published as special issue of The Information Society.

Gender Explained A New Understanding Of Identity In A Gender Creative World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Now in paperback: A world-leading expert and clinical psychologist team up to “accurately capture the pulse of the conversation about gender in the United States, expand awareness and knowledge about gender, and educate readers about common myths and misinformation”—(Library Journal, starred review) Gender is everywhere. Politicians argue over it, educational systems struggle to define it, and our friends, neighbors, and children explore it. More than ever before, young people are questioning their gender identities and redefining the role of gender in their lives. How should our society—and we as individuals (parents, teachers, friends)—respond? In Gender Explained, Diane Ehrensaft, PhD, and Michelle Jurkiewicz, PsyD, separate medical fact from fear-mongering falsehoods and answer these questions: What should parents do when their child starts experiencing gender dysphoria? Which sports teams should transgender youth play on? How should schools teach young people about gender? And most important: What is gender-affirming care, and when should an individual have access to it? With clear, expert guidance, this book is a safeguard against political vitriol, and it offers urgent protection for those among us who are transgender and/or nonbinary. Far more than an introduction to gender creativity, it is an invitation to develop compassion for everyone along the gender continuum.
