BOOK EXCERPT:

Criminal Justice Masterworks weaves together three strands of intellectual pursuit: an acquaintance with great writings on criminal justice, the perspective provided by a history of ideas, and the skills of critical thinking. The editors provide a taste of classic works usually known to students only through textbook summaries, short excerpts, or references elsewhere. The masterworks in criminal justice are separated into four areas: criminology, legal studies, police studies, and correctional studies. They include selections from Beccaria on justice and law, torture and the death penalty; Lombroso on biological and social factors in crime; Shaw & McKay on juvenile delinquency; Chambliss on law making and special interest groups; Holmes on the evolution of law; Frankfurter on interpreting statutes; Westley on police solidarity and use of force; Fogelson on the dilemmas of the professional movement in policing; Goldstein on policing in a democratic society; Beaumont & Tocqueville on the reform ideal in penitentiaries; Augustus on probation concepts and strategies; and Clemmer on the effects of imprisonment. The twelve selections are rather extensive in order to convey the main ideas, display the logical and empirical foundations of the works, and allow for critical thinking on the fundamental issues. Criminal Justice Masterworks was developed primarily for use in a capstone seminar for college undergraduates majoring in criminal justice studies. It is also useful as a brief survey of great writings in criminal justice for any advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student or criminal justice professional. It is for students, teachers, and professionals who want to explore criminal justice ideas and practices at a greater depth. "The scope of this compilation and the appropriateness of the selections are exemplary. Panzarella and Vona have done an admirable job of providing a compilation that lays the philosophical and empirical grounding required to understand contemporary aspects of criminology, legal, police, and correctional studies. ...This exemplary book would be an ideal choice for those requiring a theoretical introduction at the graduate level as well as for faculty and criminal justice professionals seeking broad coverage of these topics." -- Canadian Journal of Criminology and Criminal Justice "Summing up: Recommended." -- CHOICE Magazine "I would happily use this to teach my first years." -- Nic Groombridge, St. Mary's University College, Twickenham, in The Howard Journal

Islamic Legal Revival

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this meticulously researched volume, Leonard Wood presents his ground breaking history of Islamic revivalist thought in Islamic law. Islamic Legal Revival: Reception of European Law and Transformations in Islamic Legal Thought in Egypt, 1879-1952 brings to life the tumultuous history of colonial interventions in Islamic legal consciousness during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It tells the story of the rapid displacement of local Egyptian and Islamic law by transplanted European codes and details the evolution of resultant movements to revive Islamic law. Islamic legal revivalist movements strove to develop a modern version of Islamic law that could be codified and would replace newly imposed European laws. Wood explains in unparalleled depth and with nuance how cutting-edge trends in European legal scholarship inspired influential revivalists and informed their methods in legal thought. Timely and provocative, Islamic Legal Revival tells of the rich achievements of legal experts in Egypt who disrupted tradition in Islamic jurisprudence and created new approaches to Islamic law that were distinctively responsive to demands of the contemporary world. The story told bears important implications for understandings of Egyptian history, Islamic legal history, comparative law, and deeply contested and highly transformative interactions between European and Islamic thought.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Queer/Sexual minority which interalia includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (hereinafter LGBT) people is not a new phenomenon in today’s scenario. LGBT share a particular experience of their own sexual desires, as potentially directed toward a person of the same gender. They have transformed these experiences, desires, and practices into a social identity, a sexual orientation, which serves as a marker of individual selves and of a group. This study shows that discrimination and abuse from homophobic/transphobic world in which there is full permission to treat LGBT with cruelty makes it difficult for them to maintain a strong sense of well-being and self-esteem. Study reveals that in India LGBT lives are more secretive as they are suppress to come out easily. The Participation Of Victims In International Criminal Proceedings

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book argues that the expressivist justice model provides a meaningful foundation for the participation of victims in international criminal proceedings. Traditional criminal justice theories have tended to marginalise the role afforded to victims while informing the criminal procedures utilised by international criminal courts. As a result, giving content to, shaping, and enhancing victims’ participatory rights have been some of the most debated issues in international criminal justice. This book contributes to this debate by advancing expressivism, which has the capacity to create a historical narrative of gross human rights violations, as a core of international criminal justice able to provide a worthwhile basis for the participation of victims in proceedings and clarifying the scope and content of their participatory rights. The work provides an in-depth discussion on issues related to victims’ participatory rights from the perspective of international human rights law, victimology, and the philosophical foundation of international criminal justice. The book will be a valuable resource for researchers, academics, and policymakers working in the areas of international criminal justice, international human rights law, transitional justice, and conflict studies.
