This book has been written for people who make decisions and bring about change, at all sorts of levels, and in a wide range of disciplines. Researchers and managers have a duty to collaborate with clinicians, to understand and make the most of each others' skills. This necessitates a new paradigm of health service research which is part of a change management culture and change promotion.

Cultural citizenship is a recently developed concept in discussions on multicultural society, the media society, consumerism, and political theory. It addresses the various ways in which citizenship is becoming mixed up with culture, either through globalisation processes (involving new cultural identities, immigrations, culture industries) or by increasingly life-style oriented types of action. In the face of these challenges, the good old notion of citizenship seems in need of some assistance. This book takes a fresh look at cultural citizenship by exploring it from political-philosophical angles. It seeks to develop explicitly normative perspectives on the present debates around culture. What do the novel national and global constellations mean with respect to inclusion and exclusion, participation and marginalisation, political rights and ‘mere’ cultural practices? Moreover, this volume’s authors aim to develop notions of cultural citizenship beyond the liberal political paradigm that associates it with ‘cultural rights’, ‘cultural capital’ or the ‘consumer-citizen’. They engage the concept to re-think politics in both its meanings of citizenship practices and governance practices vis-à-vis citizens. The authors address a range of pertinent issues, exploring historical as well as present-day understandings, and theoretical as well as policy applications of the notion of cultural citizenship. The first decade of the 21st century has witnessed the decline of multiculturalism as a policy in Western countries with tighter national border controls and increasing anti-migration discourse. But what is the impact of multiculturalism in East Asia? How will East Asian nations develop their own policies on migration and multiculturalism? What does cultural diversity mean for their future? Multiculturalism in East Asia examines the development and impact of multiculturalism in East Asia with a focus on Japan, South Korean and Taiwan. It uses a transnational approach to explore key topics including policy, racialized discourses on cultural diversity and the negotiation process of marginalized subjects and groups. While making a contextualized analysis in each country, contributors will consciously make a comparison and references to other East Asian cases while also situating this as well as put their case in a wider transnational context.

The practices of participation and engagement are characterised by complexities and contradictions. All celebratory examples of uses of social media, e.g. in the Arab spring, the Occupy movement or in recent LGBTQ protests, are deeply rooted in human practices. Because of this connection, every case of mediated participation should be perceived as highly contextual and cannot be attributed to one (social) specific media logic, necessitating detailed empirical studies to investigate the different contexts of political and civic engagement. In this volume, the theoretical chapters discuss analytical frameworks that can enrich our understanding of current contexts and practices of mediated participation. The empirical studies explore the implications of the new digital conditions for the ways in which digitally mediated social interactions, practices and environments shape everyday participation, engagement or protest and their subjective as well societal meaning.

This book examines how concepts of citizenship have been negotiated in Anglophone Canadian literature since the 1970s. Katja Sarkowsky argues that literary texts conceptualize citizenship as political “co-actorship” and as cultural “co-authorship” (Boele van Hensbroek), using citizenship as a metaphor of ambivalent affiliations within and beyond Canada. In its exploration of urban, indigenous, environmental, and diasporic citizenship as well as of citizenship’s growing entanglement with questions of human rights, Canadian literature reflects and feeds into the term’s conceptual diversification.
