BOOK EXCERPT:
Improving mental health care through culturally sensitive research and practice Culturally sensitive practice is a vital component of effective mental health care in our increasingly diverse societies: Mental illnesses vary in prevalence between cultural and ethnic groups, as do the meanings attached to them and people's responses to them. The important implications of this interplay between culture and psychopathology for diagnosis and treatment are scrutinized and elucidated in this comprehensive and well-organized book, which uniquely looks at a range of practical examples involving various ethnic minority populations in North America and Europe. Leading experts from around the world have integrated divergent topics into a systematic and clinically relevant volume. Cultural Variations in Psychopathology: From Research to Practice is an important resource for researchers and in particular for any mental health professional who works with ethnically diverse communities.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Since the first edition of Culture and Psychopathology was published, a growing national and international interest in how culture impacts mental disorders and how psychopathology is influenced by culture has become a rising field of focus. In this extensive revision, chapters have been updated with new material and now incorporate the DSM-5’s classification system of mental disorders. This book is international in scope, not focusing on specific cultural groups, but rather how the cultural context affects the presentation and the process of assessment of different types of psychopathology. This edition highlights case studies and practical guidelines to support clinicians who assess patients of any cultural background.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The United States will no longer have a Caucasian majority in the second half of the 21st century. Evidence shows that misdiagnosis of mental disorders occurs more frequently in minority populations. Thus, the domestic and international utility of DSM-IV and its companions will depend on their suitability for use with various cultures. A key feature of this volume is the collaboration of cultural experts, members of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH ) Culture and Diagnosis Group, nosologists, and members of the DSM-IV Task Force and Work Groups. The NIMH and the American Psychiatric Association held a conference on Culture and Psychiatric Diagnosis to prepare for DSM-IV. Culture and Psychiatric Diagnosis developed from that meeting to enhance the cultural validity of DSM-IV. If clinicians are to become culturally sensitive, they must understand the criteria that define a disorder and consider the cultural context of the person being examined. They can then ascertain whether the criteria are applicable in the present cultural context of the patient. Culture and Psychiatric Diagnosis will benefit all clinicians treating minority patients because it documents and clarifies how cultural factors influence psychopathology; the manifestations, assessment, and course of mental disorders, and the response to treatment.

BOOK EXCERPT:
An interdisciplinary volume which draws together the concepts of culture and cognition in the wider context of psychopathology. It provides new perspectives on the etiology, treatment, and prevention of psychopathology by challenging current individualistic models and assumptions, while offering new theoretical formulations that take account of the cultural foundation of the cognition process. This book is divided into three sections. The first offers a history of the existing shortsighted models that see the individual as the source of pathological cognitions. The second section is comprised of nine chapters that examine selected mental disorders. The final section examines the implications of new models that take account of cultural sources of cognition. This book will be of interest to clinical and cross-cultural psychology; anthropology, sociology, and professionals in psychology, social services, and public health.
