eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The main purpose of this study was to explore current issues surrounding Ethiopian private higher education institutions (PHEIs) and assess the impact of regulatory practices on the smooth operation of PHEIs. The findings of the study revealed that PHEIs are making significant contribution towards increasing access to higher education and creating employment opportunities. However, there were concerns among stakeholders on the quality of education provided by PHEIs. The application of government regulatory frameworks was also found to be more stringent on PHEIs than on their counterparts in the public sector.

Becoming Middle Class

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is an ethnography of urban-to-urban migration and its role in middle-class formation in Ethiopia. Through an examination of the intersections and tensions between physical movement and social mobility, it considers how young Tigrayan people’s migration between urban centres made them distinct from both international migrants and non-migrants. Based on fieldwork in Adigrat and Addis Ababa, it focuses on these young people’s notions of progress, experiences of higher education and ethnic tensions to demonstrate how their movements enabled them to enhance their economic, social and symbolic capital while their cultural capital remained largely unchanged. The book provides new insights into the opportunities and constraints for upward social mobility and argues that the emergence of shared characteristics among urban-to-urban migrants led to the formation of a group that can be described as a middle class in Ethiopia.

A Postcolonial Political Theology Of Care And Praxis In Ethiopia S Era Of Identity Politics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The author argues that identity politics eliminates Ethiopians' in-between spaces and identities and defines in-between spaces as political, social, religious, and geographical spaces that enable Ethiopians to co-exist with equity, solidarity, and justice. The elimination of in-between spaces and in-between identities creates either-or class, religious, ethnic, and gender categories. Therefore, the author proposes an in-between theology that invites Ethiopians to a new hybrid way of being to resist fragmented and hegemonic identities. The author claims that postcolonial discourse and praxis of in-between pastoral care disrupts and interrogates hegemonic definitions of culture, home, subjectivity, and identity. On the other hand, in-between pastoral care uses embodiment, belonging, subjectivity, and hybridity as features of care and praxis to create intercultural and intersubjective identities that can co-construct and co-create in-between spaces. In the in-between spaces, Ethiopians can relate with the Other with intercultural competencies to live their difference, similarity, hybridity, and complexity.
