The Phoenix And The Flame

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

It is commonly assumed that the Counter-Reformation touched Spain only lightly, affecting the religious institutions but not the ordinary Spaniards. Henry Kamen now challenges this view by providing an intimate look at what life was like in one small but distinctive rural Spanish community from the mid-sixteenth to mid-seventeenth centuries. By examining the Catalan village of Mediona as a microcosm of Spanish society, Kamen shows that in fact the Counter Reformation led to powerful changes in the daily lives, beliefs, and customs of the common people of Catalonia and Spain. Kamen portrays the popular culture of Mediona, studying the shifting habits revealed by its administrative reforms during the Counter Reformation; the place of religious belief within the community; the attempts to change popular festivities and celebrations; the far-reaching innovations in marriage and sexuality; the role of the Inquisition and of the Jesuits; the problem of witchcraft, and the impact of books from the expanding presses of France, Italy, and the Netherlands on local language and ideas. Kamen concludes that the Counter Reformation was in some instances liberating rather than repressive in Mediona and the broader Mediterranean society of which it was part. By contemplating popular religion and culture as it was practiced by ordinary citizens, he offers new insights into an epoch normally studied only in the light of great political events, and he presents a wholly original vision of culture and society in Spain's Golden Age.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this compelling narrative, join a twenty-year-old protagonist as she navigates the uncharted territory of the first lockdown in Paris during 2020. A poignant exploration unfolds as she grapples with the weight of unfulfilled dreams, a haunting sense of sadness, and a profound realization that life's vibrant hues have eluded her until now. As the City of Lights stands eerily quiet under the shadow of the pandemic, our young protagonist confronts a myriad of emotions — from the depths of despair and depression to the haunting echoes of self-doubt. The narrative becomes a mirror reflecting her struggle with anger, the paralyzing grip of fear, and the silent battles with body shaming, bulimia, and faltering self-esteem. Through introspection, the narrative becomes a guide, prompting readers to question their own emotions, fears, and societal pressures. As the protagonist grapples with the darkness within, the story evolves into a beacon of hope. It serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, urging readers to confront their own shadows and emerge into the light of self-discovery. "Twenty, virgin and depressed" is a poignant exploration of a young woman's struggle for meaning and purpose during an unprecedented time. It is a narrative of healing, a call to embrace vulnerability, and an ode to the transformative power of self-awareness. The Virgin Mary In The Perceptions Of Women

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Once, the Virgin Mary was a pivotal element of Christianity, a holy figure at the heart of most Christians' spiritual lives. She was invoked at all major life passages--baptisms, weddings, childbirths, and funerals--and images of the Virgin Mary could be found virtually anywhere, from pub signs to sacred texts. Medieval women especially looked to Mary to answer their prayers, be their role model, and serve as their advocate in heaven. They prayed to her several times a day and sometimes devoted their entire lives to her service. This book investigates perceptions of the Virgin Mary through several centuries of literature. Focusing especially on the depictions of the Virgin Mary in medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, the author rediscovers a time when the Divine Female was very much in evidence, and good Christian women were taught to pray to a Holy Mother. Topics include the cyclical popularity of Virgin Mary; devotional objects such as Books of Hours, rosaries, and Marian gardens; the mystical qualities attributed to the Virgin Mary through centuries of reported divine visions; the historical relationships between the Virgin Mary and other religious figures, including the Devil; and Mary Magdalene as an alternative to the Virgin Mary as a feminine model.
