BOOK EXCERPT:
A Journey through Seven Decades of Radio and Tv David Hamilton’s ‘Long and Winding Road’ has taken him from the remote farm in Sussex where he grew up, dreaming of the bright lights, to working all over the UK and in America in a broadcasting career that has lasted for seven decades, eventually bringing him back after over fifty years to the same farm where he started, from which he would broadcast on national radio in his mid-eighties. This road took David to Germany where, during his National Service in the RAF, he became one of the first DJs to play rock ’n’ roll. Four years later, he did one of the first TV interviews with a new group called The Beatles. Since then he has presented thousands of radio shows and on television has hosted Top of the Pops, beauty contests, sports and game shows and appeared alongside top comedians. In this amazingly frank memoir, David tells what it was like working with such comedy greats as Ken Dodd, Benny Hill and Tommy Cooper; of the two serious car crashes he had in his twenties; of how he rode in a speedway race at Wembley Stadium; about his time as a football club director and how he played in the England team that won the World Cup in 1966. David writes of the beautiful women he has loved. His life, his loves, his laughs. It’s all here, from one of Britain’s most enduring broadcasters.

BOOK EXCERPT:
With limited fiscal capabilities, effective and efficient budgeting is a necessity for local governments in the United States. Acknowledging the critical (but often overlooked) part that raising enough revenue to fund desirable and mandatory programs plays in the budgetary process, this book offers an exclusive and comprehensive examination of the revenue side of the budget. It provides much-needed and wide-ranging context for examining and understanding local government revenues and local government revenue policy. Author J. Edwin Benton presents a comprehensive overview of the revenue structure for local governments, in general, and for counties, municipalities, townships, special districts, and school districts, in particular. The bulk of this book meticulously examines the historical patterns and trends in revenue usage by local governments and provides explanations for variations among different units of government, states, and regions of the country. This book enhances our understanding of the most relevant research and aids in refining theories that seek to explain why local governments (or different types of local governments) rely more on certain kinds of revenues. It also offers immediately applicable real-world case studies on revenue-raising capabilities, practicalities, and experiences of local governments around the country. It will be of enormous interest to public budgeting practitioners, students, and scholars.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"An evidence-based approach to crime and justice policy can go a long way toward ensuring that the best available research is considered in decisions that bear on the public good. However, the term "evidence-based" is characterized by a great deal of rhetoric. Indeed, there remains a marked disjuncture between calls for "evidence-based" policy and an understanding of what it means for policy to be "evidence-based." The calls for evidence-based policy nonetheless provide a powerful foundation for propelling a movement toward bringing about rational, cost-effective, and humane policies for the betterment of society. This handbook showcases the state of research on evidence-based crime and justice policy and the challenges that impede its creation and use. The volume has three core objectives: to promote new and productive ways to think about evidence-based policy; to demonstrate how research can contribute to and guide evidence-based policy in juvenile justice, criminal justice, and alternatives to system responses; and to identify strategies that can increase reliance on evidence-based policy. To meet these objectives, each chapter is guided by several central questions: What do we know about evidence-based policy and practice in crime and justice? How can we improve knowledge of evidence-based policy and practice? How can we promote more use of evidence-based policy and practice? Taken as a whole, the volume emphasizes the critical need for policies that are grounded in high-quality research, that address critical research gaps, and that fully acknowledge the limitations of what extant research can do to inform policy decisions"--

BOOK EXCERPT:
I have written essays on art, architecture and literature for New English Review under Theodore Dalrymple. People think we should follow and as it's the facebook age write in little bits or compete with reality TV by telling all about us. I write traditional-style poems with, I hope, meaning. A publisher described me as The Rebel Poet because I ignore literary fashion and write in my own way.I like travelling and have been to many parts of the country, towns, cities and villages. My method for finding interesting local places is to ring the local tourist office and when I arrive I go to a pub and talk to local people who know the interesting places. I take a lot of photographs of these places and a very small example is in the Gallery on my website. I am taking notes for a future large volume of Literary Essays which will range from medieval Literature to the twentieth century. I studied English literature, Dramatic Structure and Playwriting, Film Structure and script writing. I find that when I am busy a break in a traditional pub is refreshing and you return to work with new ideas and a fresh view of what you are doing. People ask what one's influences are: I try to write in my own way. But a lifetime of reading leaves a mark.

BOOK EXCERPT:
David Hamilton brings together two poems and a dramatic monologue in King Alfred’s Jewel: Poetry of the Imagination and Imaginative Photography. This contemporary, original poetry is inspired by the stories behind outlaw legends, and also takes the reader on a number of spiritual journies. Hamilton’s first poem, The Journey, remains almost as it was first written. In striving to keep his writing spontaneous, he chose not to over-develop the form of his writing. King Alfred’s Jewel is the title poem and draws its inspiration from The Dark Night of the Soul by Roman Catholic mystic Saint John of the Cross. Using a journey to find the king’s jewel as a guiding theme, the poem is a metaphor for the depression many people feel today and mistakenly try to substitute with unhealthy pasttimes. The dramatic monologue, Wolfshead, which comes at the end of the book, is an imaginative tale of outlaw legends. A 'wolfshead' was a resort of outlaws who formed a community, and this particular story is set in Sherwood Forest with Robin Hood presiding. Using two chorus figures to link proceedings and set the scene, this wolfshead is a ghostly gathering who return to tell their legendary stories… This unique book will make an excellent addition to the collection of any poetry and photography fans. It is also a fascinating read for anyone studying literature or theatre.
