The most learned of the Latin Fathers, Saint Jerome had an eventful life, spending time as a hermit, becoming a priest, serving as secretary to Pope Damasus I and later establishing a monastery at Bethlehem. A fifth century Roman lawyer and historian, Sozomen was born into a wealthy family of Bethelia, a small town near Gaza, Palestine. A man of unusually complex character, Julian the Apostate was a military commander, philosopher, social reformer and man of letters.
