This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th Dementia Lab Conference, D-Lab 2019, held in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in October 2019. The 12 full and 7 short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 53 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections: inclusion & participation, technology & experience, and Dementia Lab ideas.

Old age is currently the greatest risk factor for developing dementia. Since older people make up a larger portion of the population than ever before, the resulting increase in the incidence of dementia presents a major challenge for society. Dementia is complex and multifaceted and impacts not only the person with the diagnosis but also those caring for them and society as a whole. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) design and development are pivotal in enabling people with dementia to live well and be supported in the communities around them. HCI is increasingly addressing the need for inclusivity and accessibility in the design and development of new technologies, interfaces, systems, services, and tools. Using interdisciplinary approaches HCI engages with the complexities and ‘messiness’ of real-world design spaces to provide novel perspectives and new ways of addressing the challenge of dementia and multi-stakeholder needs. HCI and Design in the Context of Dementia brings together the work of international experts, designers and researchers working across disciplines. It provides methodologies, methods and frameworks, approaches to participatory engagement and case studies showing how technology can impact the lives of people living with dementia and those around them. It includes examples of how to conduct dementia research and design in-context in the field of HCI, ethically and effectively and how these issues transcend the design space of dementia to inform HCI design and technology development more broadly. The book is valuable for and aimed at designers, researchers, scholars and caregivers that work with vulnerable groups like people with dementia, and those directly impacted.

This book presents the latest research that shows how design thinking, making, and acting contribute to the co-designing and development of products, spaces, and services with people living with dementia. We know that there is currently no cure for the 130+ kinds of dementia that millions of people live with all over the world, but the designed interventions such as the products, spaces, and services described in this book can address stigma, isolation, loss of confidence, and raise awareness and greater understanding of dementia. This book showcases a range of innovative and creative design interventions that have been developed to break the cycle of well-established opinions, strategies, mindsets, and ways of doing that tend to remain unchallenged in the health and social care of people living with dementia. The book will be of interest to scholars working in product design, service design, experience design, architecture, design research, information design, user-centred design, and design for health.

This book gathers the revised and selected contributions to the 6th Dementia Lab Conference, D-Lab 2022, held on September 20-22, 2022, in Leuven. It describes original and innovative research on how design can contribute to the quality of life of people with dementia, their loved ones, and caregivers. The papers highlight the value of participation within design, analyzing it at three levels: personal, product, and organizational. The presented ideas and findings address ‘The Residue of Design’ and go beyond the initial impact of the design itself by looking at what benefits design research brings for people with dementia. The papers cover topics such as the development of creative design methods to foster participation and engagement from people with dementia, evaluation studies or critical reflections that reveal the impact of products and the built environment in dementia care, and raising awareness and countering stigma in societal views on dementia.

This two-volume set constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Human Aspects of IT for the Aged Population, ITAP 2021, held as part of the 23rd International Conference, HCI International 2021, held as a virtual event, in July 2021. The total of 1276 papers and 241 posters included in the 39 HCII 2021 proceedings volumes was carefully reviewed and selected from 5222 submissions. ITAP 2021 includes a total of 67 papers; they focus on topics related to designing for and with older users, technology acceptance and user experience of older users, use of social media and games by the aging population, as well as applications supporting health, wellbeing, communication, social participation and everyday activities.

In recent years, various digital and non-digital gerontechnology applications in home support have been developed. From medication administration aids (e.g., reminders and alarms), to environmental monitoring (e.g., air quality sensors and cameras), to fall detection, and health and activity monitoring (e.g., smartwatch), these promising solutions are in the works or already in the marketplace. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the development and deployment of technological solutions supporting remote care and communication (e.g., video calls), and home service delivery (e.g., meals and groceries), both of which have been developed to facilitate aging in place. This is significant, especially as avoiding the institutionalization of older adults has become a major goal of governments and caring families around the world. These technologies are a potential solution to help older adults and family caregivers age at home, maintain autonomy and independence, and avoid social isolation. These technologies can reduce the workload of professional caregivers. It is crucial to update our knowledge on evidence-based technologies for home support tested simultaneously in older adults and their family caregivers. Healthcare professionals and families are often disadvantaged by a lack of information demonstrating their utility and cost-effectiveness. This article collection focuses on providing evidence-based information about emerging and existing gerontechnologies, which is essential to make an informed decision in recommending their use or deciding to purchase them. For older adults, it will provide proofs upon which to make an informed decision to invest in a specific technology when needed. For family caregivers, it will improve their judgment when trying to choose, purchase, and adopt a technology aiming to solve a problem at home and have peace of mind when these technologies are used to support their loved ones. For clinicians, it will provide a pool of evidence-based technological tools that could be recommended to families facing the loss of autonomy and independence of older adults. For researchers and scholars, it will provide a base of knowledge for future applied research in gerontechnology. This edited volume offers the first overview and reflective discussion of how design can contribute to people’s wellbeing and mental health in the context of dementia, mental illness and neurodiversity.
