BOOK EXCERPT:

One of the most complex global challenges is improving wellbeing and developing strategies for promoting health or preventing ‘illbeing’ of the population. The role of designers in indirectly supporting the promotion of healthy lifestyles or in their contribution to illbeing has emerged. This means designers now need to consider, both morally and ethically, how they can ensure that they ‘do no harm’ and that they might deliberately decide to promote healthy lifestyles and therefore prevent ill health. Design for Health illustrates the history of the development of design for health, the various design disciplines and domains to which design has contributed. Through 26 case studies presented in this book, the authors reveal a plethora of design research methodologies and research methods employed in design for health. The editors also present, following a thematic analysis of the book chapters, seven challenges and seven areas of opportunity that designers are called upon to address within the context of healthcare. Furthermore, five emergent trends in design in healthcare are presented and discussed. This book will be of interest to students of design as well as designers and those working to improve the quality of healthcare.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Design for Health: Applications of Human Factors delves into critical and emergent issues in healthcare and patient safety and how the field of human factors and ergonomics play a role in this domain. The book uses the Design for X (DfX) methodology to discuss a wide range of contexts, technologies, and population dependent criteria (X's) that must be considered in the design of a safe and usable healthcare ecosystem. Each chapter discusses a specific topic (e.g., mHealth, medical devices, emergency response, global health, etc.), reviews the concept, and presents a case study that demonstrates how human factors techniques and principles are utilized for the design, evaluation or improvements to specific tools, devices, and technologies (Section 1), healthcare systems and environments (Section 2), and applications to special populations (Section 3). The book represents an essential resource for researchers in academia as well as practitioners in medical device industries, consumer IT, and hospital settings. It covers a range of topics from medication reconciliation to self-care to the artificial heart. - Uses the Design for X (DfX) methodology - A case study approach provides practical examples for operationalization of key human factors principles and guidelines - Provides specific design guidelines for a wide range of topics including resilience, stress and fatigue management, and emerging technologies - Examines special populations, such as the elderly and the underserved - Brings a multidisciplinary, multi-industry approach to a wide range of healthcare human factors issues

Novel Innovation Design For The Future Of Health

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book highlights the reasons for an urgently needed revision of the current global healthcare setup, discusses the needed mindset for a future of health, and provides a comprehensive development toolset for disruption (and for the needed incremental innovations towards disruption). Today’s biomedical and health innovation related research in universities encourages activities that lead to incremental innovations with a relatively low risk of failure. The healthcare industry on the other hand provides tools and devices for established healthcare providers to improve the diagnosis and therapy/ treatment of the patients’ health problems. The patient is not in the center of healthcare provision however, and prevention and prediction are not core goals. The current health setup needs to be challenged and disrupted. Disruptions are coming from technologies or processes that lead to a significant (>10x) reduction in cost or price/ performance and that also come with new business models. The need for change, effects of exponential technologies, and the needed shift to prevention and to homecare for health democratization and patient empowerment will be discussed in detail in the first parts of the book. The subsequent sections address several innovation methods with a focus on a novel meta methodology named Purpose Launchpad Health. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion on health entrepreneurship activities and needs. The final section of the book addresses how to train students to become entrepreneurial health innovators, presenting successful curricula and examples of health incubation and accelerator setups. All of the innovation tools presented and used in this book are summarized in the final chapter to help the reader get started planning an entrepreneurial venture. Written by experts from academia and industry, the book covers important basics and best practices, as well as recent developments. Chapters are concise and enriched with key messages, learning objectives and real innovation examples to bridge theory and practice. This book aims to serve as a teaching base for health innovation design and to prepare for health-related entrepreneurial ventures. Readers with medical, biomedical, biotechnology, and health economics backgrounds - and anyone who wants to become a future oriented health innovator or who believes in disruptive approaches - will find this book a useful resource and teaching tool for developing validated products/ services and processes for the future of health.

An Investigation Into How The Design Of Health Centres Can Promote Psychological Healing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Physical environment design plays an important role in psychological healing value. So the research focus on Analysis and design colour, daylight, art, sound, and natural view in a range of key areas: the lobby, reception, waiting area, and children consulting room in a type-B health-care building. During the last three decades, the Iraqi health system radically deteriorated as a result of major wars, economic recession, disastrous military adventures, and political factors. As well as, Kurdistan is a part of Iraq which still suffers from a continuous neglect of the health system. In fact, the environmental psychology is not taken into consideration in the designs of healthcare buildings. Therefore, Kurdistan needs a new design of healthcare to continue raising the level of the health-care system. Painting art alongside some parts of walls in waiting area psychologically help patients not to feel the long waiting time. It could help patients to interact with artistic environment positively through imagining and thinking which helps to divert them from focusing on their distress. Colours have influence on peoples cognition, emotions, and behaviour. Also, psychosomatic medicine affirms that psychological factors may cause physical disorders such as stress causing headaches, anger affecting the stomach, anxiety may increase heartbeat and so on (Mahnke 2012). Environmental colour design for each space has a positive physiological effect to users. It has been shown that the use of colour therapy could improve the wellbeing of the occupants.
