Climate Adaptation And Flood Risk In Coastal Cities

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents climate adaptation and flood risk problems and solutions in coastal cities including an independent investigation of adaptation paths and problems in Rotterdam, New York and Jakarta. The comparison draws out lessons that each city can learn from the others. While the main focus is on coastal flooding, cities are also affected by climate change in other ways, including impacts that occur away from the coast. The New York City Water Supply System, for example, stretches as far as 120 miles upstate, and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection has undertaken extensive climate assessment not only for its coastal facilities, but also for its upstate facilities, which will be affected by rising temperatures, droughts, inland flooding and water quality changes. The authors examine key questions, such as: Are current city plans climate proof or do we need to finetune our ongoing investments? Can we develop a flood proof subway system? Can we develop new infrastructure in such a way that it serves flood protection, housing and natural values?

Design Of Coastal Hazard Mitigation Alternatives For Rising Seas

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This timely book is about how to design alternatives to reduce coastal flood and wave damage, erosion, and loss of ecosystems facing an unknown future of sea level rise. The latest theories are interlaced with applied examples from the authors' 48 years of experience in teaching, research, and as a practicing, professional engineer in coastal engineering. The design process takes into consideration all the design constraints (scientific, engineering, economic, environmental, social/political/institutional, aesthetic, and media) to meet today's client needs, expectations, and budgets for an uncertain future. The book is organized as a textbook for graduate students. And, it is a self-contained reference for government and consulting engineers responsible for finding solutions to coastal hazards facing the world's coastal populations. New solutions are included in the book that help people of all socio-economic levels living at the coast. Both risk reduction metrics quantified in monetary terms, and increased resilience metrics quantified as vulnerability reduction must now be taken into consideration to make equitable design decisions on hazard mitigation alternatives. In the Anthropocene Era, under 'deep uncertainty' in global mean sea level predictions for the future, today's designs must mitigate today's storm damages, and be adaptable for the unpredictable water levels and storms of the future. This book includes a design 'philosophy' for water levels to year 2050 and for the long term from 2050 to 2100. Multiple spreadsheets are provided and organized to aid the design process. This is an exciting time to be 'thinkers' as Civil/Coastal engineers.Related Link(s)

Lock Gates And Other Closures In Hydraulic Projects

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Lock Gates and Other Closures in Hydraulic Projects shares the authors practical experience in design, engineering, management and other relevant aspects with regard to hydraulic gate projects. This valuable reference on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of navigation lock gates, movable closures of weirs, flood barriers, and gates for harbor and shipyard docks provides systematic coverage on all structural types of hydraulic gates, the selection of gate types, and their advantages and disadvantages. The discussion includes the latest views in new domains, such as environmental impact of hydraulic gate projects, sustainability assessments, relation with the issues of global climate change, handling accidents and calamities, and the bases of asset management. Heavily illustrated, this reference provides a generous amount of case studies based on the author's own and their colleagues' experiences from recent projects in Europe, America and other continents. - Presents extensive coverage of the operational profiles of hydraulic closures, including gates in navigation locks, movable closures on river weirs, closures of flood barriers, spillway closures and valves, and more - Outlines the different structural types of hydraulic gates, including miter gates, vertical lift gates, flap and hinged crest gates, radial gates, rolling and barge gates, sector gates and many other - Clearly outlines the selection process for gates for navigation locks, river weirs, flood barriers, hydroelectric plants, shipyard docks and other hydraulic structures - Provides comprehensive discussion of design loads and other actions to which hydraulic gates may be subjected during their service life, followed by an overview of analysis methods and tools - Addresses the newest challenges and concerns in hydraulic gate projects, such as environmental impact of hydraulic gate projects, risk-based design, sustainability issues, handling accidents and calamities, and gate maintenance in view of asset management - Presents the experiences from many recent projects in Europe and America, including the rolling gates in large European sea locks, gates in the Panama Canal new locks, flood barriers in New Orleans and the Netherlands

Irrigation Revisited

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In February 2013, a delegation of Dutch technicians working in Indonesia handed over the book “For Profit and Prosperity”, dealing with the Dutch contribution to public works in Indonesia during the period 1800–2000, to dr. ir. Suyono Sosrodarsono, who was Director General of Water Management (1966-1982) and Minister of Public Works (1983-1988) in Indonesia. In his expression of thanks, dr. ir. Suyono Sosrodarsono noticed that important information was missing in the book, especially in the field of irrigation in modern Indonesia. He suggested that Dutch participants of the irrigation projects in Indonesia since 1965 should provide the missing information by putting their memories on paper. This suggestion was adopted and has resulted in the present anthology, focusing on the rehabilitation and creation of a few irrigation projects with Dutch assistance during the period 1965-2014. Apart from purely technical information, legal frameworks, policies and programs are treated, as well as systems regarding water management, settlement, training and education. Special attention is given to the problematic nature of the West Tarum Canal and to Indonesia’s unique tidal and non-tidal swamp development. The anthology derives its authenticity from the fact that the authors of the various chapters actually participated “in the field”.
