​This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Alessandro (Sandro) D'Atri, who passed away in April 2011. Professor D'Atri started his career as a brilliant scholar interested in theoretical computer science, databases and, more generally information processing systems. He journeyed far in various applications, such as human-computer interaction, human factors, ultimately arriving at business information systems and business organisation after more than 20 years of researc hbased on "problem solving". Professor D'Atri pursued the development of an interdisciplinary culture in which social sciences, systems design and human sciences are mutually integrated. Rather than retrospection, this book is aimed to advance in these directions and to stimulate a debate about the potential of design research in the field of information systems and organisation studies with an interdisciplinary approach. Each chapter has been selected by the Editorial Board following a double blind peer review process. The general criteria of privileging the variety of topics and the design science orientation and/or empirical works in which a design research approach is adopted to solve various field problems in the management area. In addition several chapters contribute to the meta-discourse on design science research.

As a topic, organization design is poorly understood. While it is featured in most management books as a chapter dedicated to organizational structures, it is unclear whether organization design is a one-off event or an ongoing process. Thus, it has traditionally been understood to be the same as an organizational configuration, with neat lines of communication and distribution of responsibilities following pre-set typologies. Yet what can be said to constitute organizational structure in this first half of the 21st century? The extraordinary growth of digital communications, the decreasing relevance of hierarchical bureaucracies, and the general demise of command-and-control have all but decimated the traditional notion of organizational structure. Organization design needs a theoretical revamping. Using a mix of design and social science theories and concepts, Rodrigo Magalhães outlines a new human-centric interpretation of design, design principles, and design culture. He puts forward a paradigm where the organization, for purposes of its design, is considered to be a social actor in a permanent state of transformation, with significant repercussions for social and economic life. He also proposes a model of 'leaderful organization design', distinguished as practice-based, guided by values of democratic participation, and driven by design logics which places meaning-making and meaning-taking at the center of organizational life and can be adopted and adapted to suit different environments.

Organizational Systems clarifies the application of cybernetic ideas, particularly those of Beer's Viable System Model, to organizational diagnosis and design. Readers learn to appreciate the relevance of seeing the systemic coherence of the world. The book argues that many of the problems we experience today are routed in our practice of fragmenting that needs to be connected as a whole. It offers a method to study and design organizations and a methodology to deal with implementation problems. The key aim of the volume of original papers on the theory and practice of ODE featured in Organization Design and Engineering is to contribute towards overcoming the academic challenges stated above. A secondary aim is to launch the debate about ODE, including whether or not the debate itself is warranted.

This book contains the extended and revised versions papers from the Second International Symposium on Business Modeling and Software Design (BMSD 2012), held in Geneva, Switzerland, in July 2012, organized and sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Institute for Collaboration and Research on Enterprise Systems and Technology (IICREST), in cooperation with the Center for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT), the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), and Technical University of Sofia. The theme of BMSD 2012 was "From Business Modeling to Service-Oriented Solutions". The 7 papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 46 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by at least two internationally known experts from the BMSD Program Committee. The papers focus on business models, service engineering, and information systems architectures.

This book constitutes the proceedings of two events held at the CAiSE conference and relating to the areas of enterprise, business process and information systems modeling: The 19th International Conference on Business Process Modeling, Development and Support, BPMDS 2018, and the 23rd International Conference on Evaluation and Modeling Methods for Systems Analysis and Development, EMMSAD 2018. The conferences took place in Tallinn, Estonia, in June 2018. The 13 papers accepted for BPMDS were carefully reviewed and selected from 29 submissions; for EMMSAD 6 papers out of 13 submissions were accepted for publication. For BPMDS 2018, the papers were organized in topical sections as follows: context-awareness in business processes; automatic analysis of business processes; advanced approaches for business process modeling; evaluation of business process modeling techniques; an experience report on modeling collaborative processes.
