Developing Women Leaders in the Academy through Enhanced Communication Strategies explores the experiences, strategies, and triumphs of women who have attained leadership roles within the academy as well as the shortfalls, disappointments, and battle scars many women leaders have experienced in their quest to lead. Clear direction, focused strategies, and enhanced communication are necessary to increase the ever-growing number of women in leadership positions in the academy. Misogyny across Global Media argues that, although women’s experiences under misogyny are by no means universal, patriarchal social and institutional systems facilitate gender-based hostility across the globe. Contributors demonstrate how systemic misogyny and power inequities are at the root of women’s suffering at the hands of misogyny, with consequences ranging from sexual harassment to rape and even murder. Plasticity in Motion: Sport, Gender, and Biopolitics argues that sport has a transformative power that, when engaged with habitually, can create bodies with the athletic ability to succeed at the incredible performances that captivate modern sports audiences. Robert M. Foschia draws heavily from the influential and extensive work of Catherine Malabou on plasticity – the ability to shape and form – and similarly argues that transformation is not always positive or infinite, with the potential for accidents, injuries, and excommunications. However, sport as a discursive space often precludes any mention of these negative transformations, asserting itself as pure potential and becoming, often to the exclusion of the feminine. What occurs if the feminine enters into this space? Foschia intentionally integrates the feminine back into hypermasculine discussions of sport, opening a new realm of possible transformations to the ways we play, watch, and think about sports. An evidence-based, action-oriented response to the persistent, everyday inequity of academic workplaces. Despite decades of effort by federal science funders to increase the numbers of women holding advanced degrees and faculty jobs in science and engineering, they are persistently underrepresented in academic STEM disciplines, especially in positions of seniority, leadership, and prestige. Women filled 47% of all US jobs in 2015, but held only 24% of STEM jobs. Barriers to women are built into academic workplaces: biased selection and promotion systems, inadequate structures to support those with family and personal responsibilities, and old-boy networks that can exclude even very successful women from advancing into top leadership roles. But this situation can—and must—change. In Building Gender Equity in the Academy, Sandra Laursen and Ann E. Austin offer a concrete, data-driven approach to creating institutions that foster gender equity. Focusing on STEM fields, where gender equity is most lacking, Laursen and Austin begin by outlining the need for a systemic approach to gender equity.
