BOOK EXCERPT:

Diana’s Outdoor Sports is one of 4 volumes in the Sports She Wrote series written by the first woman with her own weekly sports column in a major American newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, from 1898 to 1901. Her real name (which she never revealed in print) was Mary Lagen, a prolific writer and bicycling pioneer, who inaugurated her “Athletic Woman” column at the age of 46. Diana was a passionate outdoorswoman and many of her articles are based on personal experiences. She was an excellent creative writer with a sparkling sense of humor and ability to turn a clever phrase. This volume features 217 article segments (110,000 words) about field sports, equestrianism, wheel sports, water sports and winter sports, excerpted from longer columns that veered among many topics which are included in the other three volumes. Field sports include 54 articles related to hunting, fishing, camping, guns, nature, dogs and birds. 48 articles on equestrianism focus on horseback riding, driving carriages, and attending horse shows. Cycling is featured in 67 articles, including 20 articles predating her “Athletic Woman” column, establishing her pivotal role in the evolution of the bicycle, invention of the bifurcated riding skirt, and a lawsuit against an athletic club that expelled her due to her gender. She also introduced the automobile to her readers and describes the excitement of her first ride. 48 articles describe her adventures with water sports (swimming, boating), and winter sports (ice skating and sledding). The other three volumes presenting Diana's column are Diana's Ball Sports, Diana's Fitness Fashion & Beauty, and Diana's Anecdotes & Aphorisms. Sports She Wrote is a 31-volume time-capsule of primary documents written by more than 500 women in the 19th century.

Women On The Hunt

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Hunting and shooting are generally considered male pursuits, but many women also hunt for sustenance and sport and have done so for centuries. The 58 articles and 45 illustrations in this volume of the Sports She Wrote series are culled from magazines and books written by women, originally published from 1881 to 1900 (127,000 words). They reveal the evolution of hunting from a means of obtaining food and clothing to a regulated practice aimed at ecological balance and sport. Articles cover a diverse array of hunting methods and prey, from traditional fox hunting and deer stalking to more exotic pursuits like alligator hunting in Florida, tiger hunting in Africa and whaling in the open sea. With a focus on first-person accounts, the collection offers insights into women's experiences in the field, often marked by compassion for their prey. Additionally, it delves into the practical and fashionable aspects of 19th-century women's hunting attire, showcasing the intersection of sport and style. The volume concludes with three articles about archery from 1883 to 1895, and seven articles about guns (rifles, shotguns, pistols) from 1889 to 1898. Additional articles about hunting and shooting are available in the following volumes of the Sports She Wrote series: Fisherwomen; Camping Out; Fannie Pearson Hardy; Equestrian Reports; The Horsewoman’s Trilogy; Diana’s Outdoor Sports; and Adelia Brainerd, The Outdoor Woman of Harper’s Bazar. Are women in sports being treated fairly? This book provides a comprehensive yet accessible overview of the state of women's participation in sports by referencing both current events and research. Additionally, it offers a breadth of information pertaining to work in sports made available to girls and women. Key aspects include a detailed history of women in sports since 1900 as well as a discussion of current issues surrounding their participation in high school and college athletics, recreational sports, physical activity, and leadership in sports organizations. In particular, the material not only recounts history and analyzes issues but also presents perspectives as to how and why sports continue to be simultaneously a means of empowerment and a conduit for the marginalization of girls and women.

Her Best Shot

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The gun-toting woman holds enormous symbolic significance in American culture. For over two centuries, women who pick up guns have disrupted the popular association of guns and masculinity, spurring debates about women's capabilities for violence as well as their capacity for full citizenship. In Her Best Shot, Laura Browder examines the relationship between women and guns and the ways in which the figure of the armed woman has served as a lightning rod for cultural issues. Utilizing autobiographies, advertising, journalism, novels, and political tracts, among other sources, Browder traces appearances of the armed woman across a chronological spectrum from the American Revolution to the present and an ideological spectrum ranging from the Black Panthers to right-wing militias. Among the colorful characters presented here are Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the American Revolution; Pauline Cushman, who posed as a Confederate to spy for Union forces during the Civil War; Wild West sure-shot Annie Oakley; African explorer Osa Johnson; 1930s gangsters Ma Barker and Bonnie Parker; and Patty Hearst, the hostage-turned-revolutionary-turned-victim. With her entertaining and provocative analysis, Browder demonstrates that armed women both challenge and reinforce the easy equation that links guns, manhood, and American identity.
