This book offers an alternative to operational diagnostic manuals and manuals for structured interviewing as the only sources of theoretical and clinical knowledge. It provides an exposition of psychiatric interviewing that is theoretically and clinically well founded and supplies the reader with a coherent framework for performance of a thorough psychiatric examination. The goal is not to come up with yet another interview scheme but to facilitate an understanding of the basic (but, today, completely neglected) tenets of psychopathology and phenomenology. This exposition targets the disorders of subjectivity (consciousness), the second-person processes involved in converting subjective, first-person and observable data into a third person, diagnostically useful, format. In addition, the most pertinent clinical descriptions concerning the major diagnostic groups are presented and discussed.

"The DSM-5-TR Handbook of Differential Diagnosis helps clinicians and students learning the process of psychiatric diagnosis to improve their skill in formulating a comprehensive differential diagnosis by providing a variety of approaches to consider symptomatic presentations. These include a six-step diagnostic framework of issues to consider for every patient, 30 decision trees and corresponding commentary to evaluate key presenting symptoms, and 67 differential diagnosis tables for use once a tentative diagnosis has been made, to ensure that all reasonable alternatives have received adequate consideration. Appendixes to this handbook include the DSM-5-TR Classification, to facilitate coding and to provide an overview of all the DSM-5-TR diagnoses that must be considered, as well as alphabetical indexes of the decision trees and differential diagnosis tables"--

This concise compendium of current knowledge in psychiatry--highly acclaimed and widely used in its earlier editions--has now been brought fully up to date. Goodwin and Guze have included a new chapter on psychiatric examination and a wealth of recent information from clinical, epidemiological, and neurochemical studies relevant to psychiatric disorders. They have also incorporated DSM-III-R criteria into this edition. The authors continue to demonstrate the usefulness of diagnosis based on specifically defined criteria in planning treatment and predicting outcome of illness. Statements are well documented with reference to the psychiatric literature , and the bibliography at the end of each chapter is extensive.
