Diffusion In Carbon Allotropes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Carbon has always been an essential feature of human civilisation (not to mention the human constitution), whether as mere fuel, as an expensive bauble or as an essential component of those two supporting pillars (organic chemicals, steel) of the industrial revolution. Even since its recognition as an element, 21?4 centuries ago, it has never ceased to offer new surprises and properties. Just decades ago, students had to contend with only two main forms, graphite and diamond, but nowadays there is a plethora of nanotubes, fullerenes, graphenes, etc. The present volume offers a compilation (over 400 items) of data on mass diffusion, in all of the various known allotropes of carbon, spanning some 6 decades.

Carbon Allotropes And Composites

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

CARBON ALLOTROPES and COMPOSITES The book discusses the most recent developments and trends in the use of carbon allotropes and their composites for environmental restoration and protection including synthesis, characterization and applications. Due to their huge surface area and numerous other distinguishing characteristics, nanostructure materials are widely used in a variety of applications. The production of substrates for better environmental protection and cleanup has been prompted by these qualities. They offer a superior surface for the adsorption of impurities and pollutants that contaminate industrial eff luents, wastewater, air, and soil. These all include a variety of harmful environmental substances such as toxic metals, phenolic compounds, dyes, and other substances that must be treated appropriately before being released into the environment. Composites made of highly efficient and relatively noble carbon allotropes are attracting significant attention for environmental protection and restoration. The use of carbon allotropes offers many benefits, including low cost, low toxicity, simple manufacture, and high efficiency. Therefore, they are ideal replacements for previously established materials. Carbon Allotropes and Composites is one of the first books on carbon allotropes and their composites in environmental protection and remediation, and features a description of CO2 capturing capability. Audience The book is designed for a broad audience working in the fields of materials science and engineering, nanotechnology, energy, environmental chemistry, environmental science, etc.

Metal Semiconductor Hybrid Nanoparticles Halogen Induced Shape Control Hybrid Synthesis And Electrical Transport

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Metal-semiconductor hybrid nanoparticles combine materials with different physical properties in one nanostructure. Charge separation processes and potentially increased conductivity in thin film devices make them promising candidates for advanced applications in photocatalysis or (opto) electronics. The work on hand deals with the preparation of CdSe nanoparticles that later act as seeds for the defined deposition of metals and with the electrical characterisation of monolayers of the resulting hybrid structures. In context with the shape control of the semiconductor component in a hot injection synthesis, the role of halogen compounds and the influence of their molecular structure are examined. Analytically as well as theoretically supported explanations for the formation of the evolving hexagonal pyramidal shape, which is especially favourable for metal deposition, are presented. The deposition of different metals onto the obtained semiconductor components is examined and unusual instabilities of an Au shell on CdSe hybrid nanoparticles are investigated. Furthermore, the impact of deposited Pt on the electrical transport of CdSe nanopyramids is demonstrated.
