Computer-centered networks and technologies are reshaping social relations and constituting new social domains on a global scale, from virtually borderless electronic markets and Internet-based large-scale conversations to worldwide open source software development communities, transnational corporate production systems, and the global knowledge-arenas associated with NGO networks. This book explores how such "digital formations" emerge from the ever-changing intersection of computer-centered technologies and the broad range of social contexts that underlie much of what happens in cyberspace. While viewing technologies fundamentally in social rather than technical terms, Digital Formations nonetheless emphasizes the importance of recognizing the specific technical capacities of digital technologies. Importantly, it identifies digital formations as a new area of study in the social sciences and in thinking about globalization. The ten chapters, by leading scholars, examine key social, political, and economic developments associated with these new configurations of organization, space, and interaction. They address the operation of digital formations and their implications for the development of longstanding institutions and for their wider contexts and fields, and they consider the political, economic, and other forces shaping those formations and how the formations, in turn, are shaping such forces. Recent years have seen amateur personal stories, focusing on «me», flourish on social networking sites and in digital storytelling workshops. The resulting digital stories could be called «mediatized stories». This book deals with these self-representational stories, aiming to understand the transformations in the age-old practice of storytelling that have become possible with the new, digital media. Its approach is interdisciplinary, exploring how the mediation or mediatization processes of digital storytelling can be grasped and offering a sociological perspective of media studies and a socio-cultural take of the educational sciences. Digital Governance of Education explores the multiple ways in which digital technologies are changing the experience of education. With much of the contemporary education practice either taking place or being documented digitally, a huge amount of data is constantly being collected and analysed to give sophisticated and up-to-date accounts of education practice in contemporary societies. Such 'datafication' of education, mediated through technology, gives rise to what the author defines as 'digital governance' of education – a transnational assemblage of people, technologies and policies that increasingly affects how national education systems are organized and managed. Paolo Landri argues that the emergence of digital governance is closely related to the new wave of standardization in education, exemplified by the shift towards what is measurable (for example focus on 'learning outcomes') and towards transparency in education practice - a shift that is both facilitated and augmented by digital technologies. The author places the digital governance of education within the framework of Europeanization of education, exploring how it contributes to the creation and regulation of European education arena through consolidation of digital space and tools introduced in this process (such as guidelines, country reports and online dashboards).
