A systematic explanation of the principles of radio systems, Digital Radio System Design offers a balanced treatment of both digital transceiver modems and RF front-end subsystems and circuits. It provides an in-depth examination of the complete transceiver chain which helps to connect the two topics in a unified system concept. Although the book tackles such diverse fields it treats them in sufficient depth to give the designer a solid foundation and an implementation perspective. Covering the key concepts and factors that characterise and impact radio transmission and reception, the book presents topics such as receiver design, noise and distortion. Information is provided about more advanced aspects of system design such as implementation losses due to non-idealities. Providing vivid examples, illustrations and detailed case-studies, this book is an ideal introduction to digital radio systems design. Offers a balanced treatment of digital modem and RF front-end design concepts for complete transceivers Presents a diverse range of topics related to digital radio design including advanced transmission and synchronization techniques with emphasis on implementation Provides guidance on imperfections and non-idealities in radio system design Includes detailed design case-studies incorporating measurement and simulation results to illustrate the theory in practice

Digital Radio Systems On A Chip

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book focuses on a specific engineering problem that is and will continue to be important in the forth-coming information age: namely, the need for highly integrated radio systems that can be embedded in wireless devices for various applications, including portable mobile multimedia wireless communications, wireless appliances, digital cellular, and digital cordless. Traditionally, the design of radio IC’s involves a team of engineers trained in a wide range of fields that include networking, communication systems, radio propagation, digital/analog circuits, RF circuits, and process technology. However as radio IC’s become more integrated, the need for a diverse skill set and knowledge becomes essential for professionals as well as students to broaden beyond their trained area of expertise and to become proficient in related areas. The key to designing an optimized, economical solution for radio systems on a chip hinges on the designer’s thorough understanding of the complex trade-offs from communication systems down to circuits. To acquire the insight and understanding of the complex system and circuit trade-offs, a designer must digest volumes of books covering diverse topics, such as communications theory, radio propagation, and digital/analog/RF circuits. While books are available today that cover the individual areas, they tend to be narrowly focused and do not provide the necessary insight in the specific problem of integrating a complete radio system on a chip.

Radio System Design For Telecommunications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Step-by-step tutorial to master current design techniques for wireless communication systems The Third Edition of Radio System Design for Telecommunications brings this highly acclaimed book fully up to date with the latest technological advances and new applications. At the same time, the hallmarks of the previous editions, including the text's popular tutorial presentation, have been retained. Readers therefore get all the tools and guidance they need to master an essential set of current design techniques for radio systems that operate at frequencies of 3 MHz to 100 GHz. Using simple mathematics, the author illustrates design concepts and applications. The book's logical organization, beginning with a discussion of radio propagation problems, enables readers to progressively develop the skills and knowledge needed to advance in the text. Topics that are new to the Third Edition include: Chapter devoted to wireless LANs (WLANs) as detailed in IEEE 802.11 Subsections covering IEEE 802.15, 802.16, 802.20, and the wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) WiFi, WiMax, and UWB applications that have recently experienced explosive growth Broadband radio in telecommunications, as well as offset frequency division multiplex (OFDM), a new technique for transmitting information in an interference environment The use of very small aperture satellite terminal (VSAT) systems as an economical alternative to public switched telecommunication networks (PSTN) Review questions and problems at the end of each chapter engage readers' newfound skills and knowledge and help them assess whether they are ready to progress to the next chapter. References are provided for readers who want to investigate particular topics in greater depth. Students in wireless telecommunications will find the book's tutorial style ideal for learning all the ins and outs of radio system design, whereas professionals in the industry will want to refer to the Third Edition for its clear explanations of the latest technology and applications.

High Speed Digital System Design

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book describes for readers the entire, interconnected complex of theoretical and practical aspects of designing and organizing the production of various electronic devices, the general and main distinguishing feature of which is the high speed of processing and transmitting of digital signals. The authors discuss all the main stages of design - from the upper system level of the hierarchy (telecommunications system, 5G mobile communications) to the lower level of basic semiconductor elements, printed circuit boards. Since the developers of these devices in practice deal with distorted digital signals that are transmitted against a background of interference, the authors not only explain the physical nature of such effects, but also offer specific solutions as to how to avoid such parasitic effects, even at the design stage of high-speed devices.

Modern Digital Radio Communication Signals And Systems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book serves as an easily accessible reference for wireless digital communication systems. Topics are presented with simple but non-trivial examples and then elaborated with their variations and sophistications. The book includes numerous examples and exercises to illustrate key points. For this new edition, a set of problems at the end of each chapter is added, for a total of 298 problems. The book emphasizes both practical problem solving and a thorough understanding of fundamentals, aiming to realize the complementary relationship between practice and theory. Though the author emphasizes wireless radio channels, the fundamentals that are covered here are useful to different channels - digital subscriber line, coax, power lines, optical fibers, and even Gigabit serial connections. The material in chapters 5 (OFDM), 6 (Channel coding), 7 (Synchronization), and 8 (Transceivers) contains new and updated information, not explicitly available in typical textbooks, and useful in practice. For example, in chapter 5, all known orthogonal frequency division multiplex signals are derived from its digitized analog FDM counterparts. Thus, it is flexible to have different pulse shape for subcarriers, and it can be serial transmission as well as block transmission. Currently predominant cyclic prefix based OFDM is a block transmission using rectangular pulse in time domain. This flexibility may be useful in certain applications.
