Images of the devastation wreaked by typhoons, flooding, earthquakes and drought in the Philippines circulate globally as an important part of disaster discourses. This collection seeks to move beyond these simplistic representations of calamity by bringing together a group of Filipino and international scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to grapple with the complex nature of disaster in the Philippines. Firmly grounded in the relationship between disaster and place, the volume’s contributors confront the challenges of the Philippine nation’s internal heterogeneity of language, ethnicity and class. In doing so, this book seeks to engage the specificities of place amid diversity, and explores two broad but interrelating avenues of investigation through case studies drawn from across the archipelago: How can environmental extremity in the Philippines help us understand disasters? Disaster Technology: An Annotated Bibliography presents an annotated bibliography of disaster technology. The references are arranged in the following sections: relief organization, medical aspects (planning, general, nutrition), sociological aspects, and physical aspects (general, earthquakes). The abstracts are arranged alphabetically by author's name in each section. Some of the controversial issues and the areas related to disaster technology are reviewed. This volume consists of seven chapters, the first of which introduces the reader to general aspects of relief work especially international disaster aid. Logistic, administrative, political, and economic factors are highlighted. The next three chapters deal with medical aspects of relief work and cover hospital disaster planning and surgical triage, medical problems arising from disasters, and nutritional problems of relevance to development as well as to disasters. Attention then turns to sociological studies of disasters that have been carried out in industrialized societies in general and America in particular. Some work on psychological and psychiatric factors is considered. The chapters on physical aspects of disaster relief includes literature on public health engineering, design for disaster (including emergency shelter), and prevention and warning techniques. Earthquakes are considered separately in the final chapter. This book is written to supply relief agencies with information on the published and unpublished literature available concerning technical aspects of disaster relief and prevention with special emphasis on developing countries. It is also intended to provide those involved in relevant research with information on disaster topics from other disciplines.

Technological development has not only provided mankind with more prosperity, but with increased destructive power as well. It is not surprising, therefore, that a new medical discipline has emerged: disaster medicine. The realization that disasters have effects which cross the traditional boundaries of medical specialisms and nationality, led to the foundation of the International Society of Disaster Medicine (ISDM), which issued an international curriculum on education and training in disaster medicine. As a logical consequence the ISDM decided to develop its curriculum into a handbook, now available to the global community of disaster medicine specialists. This Handbook of Disaster Medicine contains contributions from international experts in the field and will be of value and interest to a wide variety of professionals in the discipline of disaster medicine and management.

This book includes selected papers presented at the international expert forum on “Mainstreaming Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction in Education,” held at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand on 1–2 December 2017. The journey towards disaster risk reduction and resilience requires the participation of a wide array of stakeholders ranging from academics to policymakers, to disaster managers. Given the multifaceted and interdependent nature of disasters, disaster risk reduction and resilience require a multidisciplinary problem-solving approach and evidence-based techniques from the natural, social, engineering, and other relevant sciences. Traditionally, hazard and disaster-related studies have been dominated by the engineering and social science fields. In this regard, the main purpose of this book is to capture the multidisciplinary and multisectoral nature of disaster risk reduction, and to gather existing data, research, conceptual work, and practical cases regarding risk reduction and its ties to sustainable development under a single “umbrella.” Along with the sustainability aspect, the book also links disaster risk reduction with development, technology, governance, education, and climate change, and includes discussions on challenges, solutions, and best practices in the mainstreaming of disaster risk reduction.

The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan plunged the country into a state of crisis. As the nation struggled to recover from a record breaking magnitude 9 earthquake and a tsunami that was as high as thirty-eight meters in some places, news trickled out that Fukushima had experienced meltdowns in three reactors. These tragic catastrophes claimed some 20,000 lives, initially displacing some 500,000 people and overwhelming Japan's formidable disaster preparedness. This book brings together the analysis and insights of a group of distinguished experts on Japan to examine what happened, how various institutions and actors responded and what lessons can be drawn from Japan’s disaster. The contributors, many of whom experienced the disaster first hand, assess the wide-ranging repercussions of this catastrophe and how it is already reshaping Japanese culture, politics, energy policy, and urban planning.

On the 11th of March 2011, an earthquake registering 9.0 on the Richter scale (the most powerful to ever strike Japan) hit the Tohoku region in northern Japan. The earthquake produced a devastating tsunami that wiped out coastal cities and towns, leaving 18,561 people dead or registered as missing. Due to the disaster, the capability of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), was compromised, causing nuclear meltdown. The hydrogen blast destroyed the facilities, resulting in a spread of radioactive materials, and, subsequently, serious nuclear contamination. This combined event – earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown – became known as the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster. This book examines the response of the Japanese government to the disaster, and its attempts to answer the legal questions posed by the combination of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown. Japanese law, policy, and infrastructure were insufficiently prepared for these disasters, and the country’s weaknesses were brutally exposed. This book analyses these failings, and discusses what Japan, and other countries, can learn from these events.
