This book presents the outcomes of the special sessions of the 16th International Conference on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence 2019, a forum that brought together ideas, projects and lessons associated with distributed computing and artificial intelligence, and their applications in various areas. Artificial intelligence is currently transforming our society. Its application in distributed environments, such as the internet, electronic commerce, environmental monitoring, mobile communications, wireless devices, and distributed computing, to name but a few, is continuously increasing, making it an element of high added value and tremendous potential. These technologies are changing constantly as a result of the extensive research and technical efforts being pursued at universities and businesses alike. The exchange of ideas between scientists and technicians from both the academic and industrial sectors is essential to facilitating the development of systems that can meet the ever-growing demands of today’s society. This year’s technical program was characterized by high quality and diversity, with contributions in both well-established and evolving areas of research. More than 120 papers were submitted to the main and special sessions tracks from over 20 different countries (Algeria, Angola, Austria, Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Oman, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Tunisia, the United Kingdom and United States), representing a truly “wide area network” of research activity. The symposium was jointly organized by the Osaka Institute of Technology and the University of Salamanca. This year’s event was held in Avila, Spain, from 26th to 28th June, 2019. The book brings together past experience, current work and promising future trends in distributed computing, artificial intelligence and their applications to efficiently solve real-world problems. It combines contributions in well-established and evolving areas of research, including the content of the DCAI 17 Special Sessions, which focused on multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects, such as AI-driven methods for multimodal networks and processes modeling, and secure management towards smart buildings and smart grids. The symposium was jointly organized by the Polytechnic of Porto, the Osaka Institute of Technology and the University of Salamanca. The latest event was held in Porto, Portugal, from 21st to 23rd June 2017.

DCAI 2023 is a forum to present applications of innovative techniques for studying and solving complex problems in artificial intelligence and computing areas. This year’s technical program presents both high quality and diversity, with contributions in well-established and evolving areas of research. Specifically, 108 papers were submitted, by authors from 31 different countries representing a truly “wide area network” of research activity. The DCAI 23 technical program has selected 36 full papers in the main track and, as in past editions, there will be special issues in ranked journals. This symposium is organized by the LASI and Centro Algoritmi of the University of Minho (Portugal). The authors like to thank all the contributing authors, the members of the Program Committee, National Associations (AEPIA, APPIA), and the sponsors (AIR Institute).

This book features 21 papers spanning many different sub-fields in bioinformatics and computational biology, presenting the latest research on the practical applications to promote fruitful interactions between young researchers in different areas related to the field. Next-generation sequencing technologies, together with other emerging and diverse experimental techniques, are evolving rapidly, creating numerous types of omics data. These, in turn, are creating new challenges for the expanding fields of bioinformatics and computational biology, which seek to analyse, process, integrate and extract meaningful knowledge from such data. This calls for new algorithms and approaches from fields such as databases, statistics, data mining, machine learning, optimization, computer science, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Clearly, biology is increasingly becoming a science of information, requiring tools from the computational sciences. To address these challenges, we have seen the emergence of a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists with a strong background in the biological and computational sciences. In this context, the interaction of researchers from different scientific areas is, more than ever, vital to boost the research efforts in the field and contribute to the training of the new generation of interdisciplinary scientists.

This book contains accepted papers presented at CISIS 2020 held in the beautiful and historic city of Burgos (Spain), in September 2020. The aim of the CISIS 2020 conference is to offer a meeting opportunity for academic and industry-related researchers belonging to the various, vast communities of computational intelligence, information security, and data mining. The need for intelligent, flexible behaviour by large, complex systems, especially in mission-critical domains, is intended to be the catalyst and the aggregation stimulus for the overall event. After a thorough peer-review process, the CISIS 2020 International Program Committee selected 43 papers which are published in these conference proceedings achieving an acceptance rate of 28%. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the CISIS 2020 edition was blended, combining on-site and on-line participation. In this relevant edition, a special emphasis was put on the organization of five special sessions related to relevant topics as Fake News Detection and Prevention, Mathematical Methods and Models in Cybersecurity, Measurements for a Dynamic Cyber-Risk Assessment, Cybersecurity in a Hybrid Quantum World, Anomaly/Intrusion Detection, and From the least to the least: cryptographic and data analytics solutions to fulfil least minimum privilege and endorse least minimum effort in information systems. The selection of papers was extremely rigorous in order to maintain the high quality of the conference and we would like to thank the members of the Program Committees for their hard work in the reviewing process. This is a crucial process to the creation of a high standard conference, and the CISIS conference would not exist without their help.

This book presents the latest research on Ambient Intelligence including software and applications. Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a paradigm emerging from Artificial Intelligence, where computers are used as proactive tools assisting people with their day-to-day activities, making everyone’s life more comfortable. The inclusion of computational power and communication technologies in everyday objects is growing, and their embedding into our environments should be as invisible as possible. In order for AmI to be successful, human interaction with computing power and embedded systems in the surroundings should be smooth and happen without people actually noticing it. The only awareness people should have arises from AmI: more safety, comfort and wellbeing, emerging in a natural and inherent way. ISAmI is the International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence, aiming to bring together researchers from various disciplines that constitute the scientific field of AmI to present and discuss the latest results, new ideas, projects and lessons learned.
