This book describes the emerging field of self-organizing, multicore, distributed and real-time embedded systems. Self ‐organization of both hardware and software can be a key technique to handle the growing complexity of modern computing systems. Distributed systems running hundreds of tasks on dozens of processors, each equipped with multiple cores, requires self‐organization principles to ensure efficient and reliable operation. This book addresses various, so-called Self‐X features such as self-configuration, self‐optimization, self‐adaptation, self‐healing and self‐protection.

Due to the decreasing production costs of IT systems, applications that had to be realised as expensive PCBs formerly, can now be realised as a system-on-chip. Furthermore, low cost broadband communication media for wide area communication as well as for the realisation of local distributed systems are available. Typically the market requires IT systems that realise a set of specific features for the end user in a given environment, so called embedded systems. Some examples for such embedded systems are control systems in cars, airplanes, houses or plants, information and communication devices like digital TV, mobile phones or autonomous systems like service- or edutainment robots. For the design of embedded systems the designer has to tackle three major aspects: The application itself including the man-machine interface, The (target) architecture of the system including all functional and non-functional constraints and, the design methodology including modelling, specification, synthesis, test and validation. The last two points are a major focus of this book. This book documents the high quality approaches and results that were presented at the International Workshop on Distributed and Parallel Embedded Systems (DIPES 2000), which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), and organised by IFIP working groups WG10.3, WG10.4 and WG10.5. The workshop took place on October 18-19, 2000, in Schloß Eringerfeld near Paderborn, Germany. Architecture and Design of Distributed Embedded Systems is organised similar to the workshop. Chapters 1 and 4 (Methodology I and II) deal with different modelling and specification paradigms and the corresponding design methodologies. Generic system architectures for different classes of embedded systems are presented in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 several design environments for the support of specific design methodologies are presented. Problems concerning test and validation are discussed in Chapter 5. The last two chapters include distribution and communication aspects (Chapter 6) and synthesis techniques for embedded systems (Chapter 7). This book is essential reading for computer science researchers and application developers.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 18th Ada-Europe International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies, Ada-Europe 2013, was held in Berlin, Germany, in June 2013. The 11 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from various submissions. They are organized in topical sections on multi-core and distributed systems; Ada and Spark; dependability; and real-time systems.

This volume contains the 37 papers presented at the 9th International Con- rence on Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems and Applications (RT- CSA 2003). RTCSA is an international conference organized for scientists and researchers from both academia and industry to hold intensive discussions on advancing technologies topics on real-time systems, embedded systems, ubiq- tous/pervasive computing, and related topics. RTCSA 2003 was held at the Department of Electrical Engineering of National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. Paper submissions were well distributed over the various aspects of real-time computing and embedded system technologies. There were more than 100 participants from all over the world. The papers, including 28 regular papers and 9 short papers are grouped into thecategoriesofscheduling,networkingandcommunication,embeddedsystems, pervasive/ubiquitous computing, systems and architectures, resource mana- ment, ?le systems and databases, performance analysis, and tools and de- lopment. The grouping is basically in accordance with the conference program. Earlier versions of these papers were published in the conference proceedings. However, some papers in this volume have been modi?ed or improved by the authors, in various aspects, based on comments and feedback received at the conference. It is our sincere hope that researchers and developers will bene?t from these papers. We would like to thank all the authors of the papers for their contribution. This year, the IFIP Working Conference on Distributed and Parallel Embedded Sys tems (DIPES 2008) is held as part of the IFIP World Computer Congress, held in Milan on September 7 10, 2008. The embedded systems world has a great deal of experience with parallel and distributed computing. Many embedded computing systems require the high performance that can be delivered by parallel computing. Parallel and distributed computing are often the only ways to deliver adequate real time performance at low power levels. This year’s conference attracted 30 submissions, of which 21 were accepted. Prof. Jor ̈ g Henkel of the University of Karlsruhe graciously contributed a keynote address on embedded computing and reliability. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the ACM/IFIP/USENIX International Conference on Distributed Systems Platforms, Middleware 2005, held in Grenoble, France in November/December 2005. Nowadays embedded systems design is subject to seamless integration with the physical and electronic environment while meeting requirements like reliability, availability, robustness, power consumption, cost, and deadlines. This book results from the ARTIST FP5 project funded by the European Commision. The 7th IFIP Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems (SEUS) followed on the success of six previous editions in Capri, Italy (2008), Santorini, Greece (2007), Gyeongju, Korea (2006), Seattle, USA (2005), Vienna, Austria (2004), and Hokodate, Japan (2003), establishing SEUS as one of the emerging workshops in the ?eld of embedded and ubiq- tous systems. SEUS 2009 continued the tradition of fostering cross-community scienti?c excellence and establishing strong links between researchand industry. The ?elds of both embedded computing and ubiquitous systems have seen considerable growth over the past few years. Given the advances in these ?elds, and also those in the areas of distributed computing, sensor networks, midd- ware, etc. , the area of ubiquitous embedded computing is now being envisioned as the wayof the future. The systems and technologies that will arise in support of ubiquitous embedded computing will undoubtedly need to address a variety of issues, including dependability, real-time, human–computer interaction, - tonomy, resource constraints, etc. All of these requirements pose a challenge to the research community. The purpose of SEUS 2009 was to bring together - searchersand practitioners with an interest in advancing the state of the artand the state of practice in this emerging ?eld, with the hope of fostering new ideas, collaborations and technologies. SEUS 2009 would not have been possible without the e?ort of many people.
