Questioning how Anglican liturgy welcomes people who are suffering, Suffering in Worship uniquely applies a narrative–ritual model for the analysis of both the liturgical text and worship services themselves. In this book, van Ommen draws on interviews with participants in worship as well as clergy. Highlighting several elements in the liturgy which address suffering, including the Eucharist, songs, sermons and prayers of intercession, he shows the significance of a warm and safe liturgical community as a necessary context for suffering people to find consolation. This book also uses the concept of remembrance to plead for liturgy that attends to the suffering of both God and people. This essay is centered around five questions: (i) What is the proper place of liturgical theology? (ii) Which evolutions have there been in the past and which current tendencies are there in the field of liturgical theology? (iii) Which contents must liturgical theologians focus on? (iv) How can liturgical theologians engage in research? And (v): How can liturgical theology appropriately respond to what happens in Church and society? Each question corresponds with one part. The rationale behind ordering the content of this essay in this way is the following: starting from a reflection about the non-evident place of liturgical theology, an attempt is made to give it a fitting profile again on the basis of its genealogy in the Liturgical Movement. Correspondingly, liturgical theology can be considered a full-fledged research program, which does not simply deal with Christian rituals, festivals and sacraments, but with the core of Christian faith.

While working for Morris Cerullo, I would contact people claiming to be healed, obtaining follow-up x-rays, doctor's statements, and interviewing family and friends. I saw first hand how God works in people's lives. Then I began receiving letters from people who thought they were healed and later their symptoms returned, and from people who had not been healed and questioned why. Books on healing were no help being merely testimonies. A Bible College course on healing was attempting to decide whether healing was for today. Finally, prayerfully I went through the entire Bible, copying every verse having to do with healing. I don't claim to have found all the answers, and there are no formulas or pat answers with God. What I learned will be very helpful to others. The Bible says, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Hosea 4:6 In the case of healing this is literally true.

What motivates practice of the liturgy and sacramental rites of the church? Does the worship of God begin and end within each ritual enactment, or does the truth and value of sacramental celebration reside in the broader context of Christian life in church and society?
