God S Good World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The doctrine of creation has often been neglected in Christian theology. Distinguished evangelical theologian Jonathan Wilson exposes what has been missing in current theological discourse and offers an original, constructive work on this doctrine. The book unites creation and redemption, showing the significance of God's work of creation for understanding the good news of redemption in Jesus Christ. Wilson develops a trinitarian account of the life of the world and sets forth how to live wisely, hopefully, peaceably, joyfully, and generously in that world. He also shows how a mature doctrine of creation can help the church think practically about contemporary issues, including creation care, sexuality, technology, food and water, and more.

The Cosmos And The Creator

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The need to position Christianity in relation to other religions, most notably Judaism and Islam, has brought about a renewed interest in the theme of creation, which has been off the theological agenda for much of the 20th century. Environmentalists, biologists, feminists and process theologians have all registered concerns, from their different perspectives, about the way in which the traditional doctrine of creation characterizes the relationship between the cosmos and its creator. Furthermore, the hoilism of the New Age and its resonance with eastern patterns of thought seems to offer something radically different from the Judaeo-Christian understanding of the creation. It is in the light of these concerns that the author argues for the doctrine of creation as a distictively Christian article of faith. By recognizing at the the same time that criticisms which have been made of its traditional formulations must be properly acknowledged and accommodated, the author is able to use the best insights from secular disciples to construct a theology of creation which is responsible.

Barth S Doctrine Of Creation

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Theologians working on the doctrine of creation are compelled to wrestle with Karl Barth's explication of this doctrine. And yet, studies on Barth have not paid a significant amount of attention to this aspect of his theology. To help fill this gap, Gabriel introduces and clarifies Barth's doctrine of creation by outlining its contours and evaluating three prominent critiques of Barth--critiques that focus on questions regarding the place of nature, the Trinity, Jesus, and history in his doctrine. Gabriel finds value in these critiques, while also identifying ways in which Barth's theology sometimes adequately addresses them. Through this, Gabriel mines insights from Barth that can contribute to a theology of nature or ecological theology and a Trinitarian theology of creation.

Problem And Promise In Colin E Gunton S Doctrine Of Creation

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

While much dialogue has focused on aspects of Colin Gunton’s Trinitarian theology, there has been a need for a full-scale study of Gunton's doctrine of creation that locates the significance of his understanding of creation within the wider spectrum of his theology. Problem and Promise demonstrates how Gunton's doctrine of creation cannot be read in abstraction from his Trinitarian theology and argues that creation remains a central feature in Gunton’s writing that holds lasting importance for understanding ethical and moral aspects of Gunton’s theology. William B. Whitney establishes how this Trinitarian account of creation goes beyond offering a theological description of the created realm and also provides the basis for understanding human involvement in creation through the enterprises of culture.

God The Creator

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

What does it mean to believe that God is the creator? Are you required to dismiss the findings of modern science and the theory of evolution? While Christians share a belief in “God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth,” they do not all agree on just when and how God created. Many are unaware of the many different views on origins that are held by Christians and on the theological implications of those beliefs. This book discusses the basic Christian beliefs on the origins of the universe and of life, but then moves forward to provide some pointers toward a more robust doctrine. It is very difficult to be truly neutral, and the author does not attempt to do so. Rather, he attempts to speak in such a way as to foster further discussion. Key topics include biblical interpretation, the relationship of written revelation and study of the created world, the fall, sin, and redemption, including the glorious purpose God has for all creation. It is suitable as an introduction to the issues involved in this debate.
