BOOK EXCERPT:
"First published to broad acclaim in the early 1980s, today?Donaldsons' Essential Public Health is widely adopted as the standard text for public health students and practitioners across a range of disciplines. The text brings together, in one volume, the principles and applications of epidemiology, the main health problems experienced by populations and by the main groups within them, the strategies for intervention to promote health and prevent disease, the main themes underlying health policy formulation, and a description of the provision of health services. This fourth edition marks the biggest change to the book in 20 years, introducing an entirely new schedule of chapters reflecting modern thinking on the scope of public health. While the core elements still cover the position for the UK, each chapter is set in the global health context. Brand new and entirely revised chapters include:Quality and Safety of Health Care Social Determinants of HealthHistory of Public HealthNon-communicable Disease Disability Health in Later Life Mental Health Communicable DiseaseThe Environment and HealthIn this new edition, the practical, accessible approach encompasses the theory and practice of modern public health in a global and national context. It is essential reading for all students of public health, as well as students of medicine, nursing, health visiting, policy and social science. Those involved in courses of postgraduate study or embarking on a career in public health will find it of great value. The book is also an?extremely useful resource for established practitioners - public health doctors, senior nurses, general practitioners and health visitors - and highly recommended for healthcare policy makers and shapers, healthcare service managers, and members of NHS boards and Primary Care Trusts."--Provided by publisher.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Essential Public Health is the second edition to the widely acclaimed and best-selling Essential Public Medicine. The latter became a standard text in very many institutions of learning and training as well as being read by students and practitioners across a wide range of disciplines. Throughout its 17 years of existence, it has been in constant demand. Essential Public Medicine builds upon this successful formula but has been fundamentally revised and recast. It describes the whole spectrum of public health: the principles, methods and applications of epidemiology, the assessment of health a.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This basic textbook of Community Medicine, which includes descriptions of the related social ~ervices, is intended for a wide range of readers who require knowledge and understanding of the essential aspects of the subject. These include undergraduate medical students and qualified doctors who are engaged in postgraduate courses of study or training schemes, particularly those in community medicine and general practice. When writing this book we also had in mi nd the needs of students of nursing at all levels at a time when an increasing emphasis on the community is being reflected in the content of curricula and the composition of examination papers. It is our view that this account of community medicine will also be of value to established practitioners -community physicians, community health doctors, senior nurses and health visitors - who wish to con solidate or update their knowledge. The growing involvement of the professions in the management and planning of health services means that many general practitioners, hospital doctors and nurses are being called upon to take a population perspective and to become acquainted with many of the concepts and issues discussed in this book. In addition, there are those professionals who work closely with medicine and nursing and have a common concern in providing care and promoting prevention -groups such as social workers and health education personnel. For all these reasons we would ho pe that many groups might read the book and find it useful.
